Warning the school principals against proxy attendance of students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Chairman Ashok Ganguly said if the board comes across any school promoting this unhealthy trend, its affiliation would be cancelled.
Ganguly was addressing school principals of four cities at the Spring Dale School in Amritsar today.
This was revealed by S C Saxena, Principal, Kundan Vidya Mandir, Ludhiana, who was among 17 other school principals from the city. More than 50 school principals from various schools across Ludhiana, Amritsar, Batala and Jalandhar were present.
It is a common practice among schools to mark proxy presence of students while the students sit at home and prepare for competitive examinations.
While issuing another important instruction, the CBSE Chairman said, "The date of birth certificate once given by the parents of any ward would be final. Sometimes parents come with a new birth certificate and request school authorities to replace it on the pretext that it was issued wrongly."
He said as far as the spelling of the name of a student is concerned, it can be changed but after following the proper procedure.
Ganguly has forbidden schools from giving provisional admission to students of other local schools.
The Chairman said, "Some schools give provisional admission to the students of other local schools in Class XI. The schools are not supposed to indulge in this practice."
Another principal who participated in this meeting said, "To increase the quality and quantity of academics, some schools give provisional admission to the students of other schools. The chairman asked all not to admit the students of any other local schools before the declaration of the annual result."
Commenting on the continuous evaluation system, he recommended continuing with ‘No homework’ for students up to Class II and said children should come to school without a bag. On this point some principals said parents are not satisfied with the practice as they face problems in teaching their wards at home. In reply, Ganguly said, "For their satisfaction, they can keep an extra set of books at home."
