Dr Kidney may face jail term up to 10 years, if convicted

New Delhi, February 9: Dr Amit Kumar, alleged kingpin in the multi-crore kidney scam, may face a jail term up to 10 years, if convicted on charges of illegal organ transplant, wrongful confinement and cheating.

Forty-year-old Kumar, who was arrested in Nepal on Thursday night and subsequently deported to India, has been booked by the CBI under various sections of Indian Penal Code including 326 (Voluntary causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon).

Under this Section, an accused could be sentenced up to 10 years and slapped fine.

Other Sections were 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) with a one year imprisonment and 420 (cheating), having a maximum jail term of seven years and fine.

Dr Kumar has also been booked under Transplantation of Human Organs Act of 1994 under which maximum punishment was of seven years and fine of Rs 20,000 besides cancellation of certificate to practice.
