Pune The lure of a laptop and an iPhone at throwaway prices proved too dear for manager of an IT firm recently. The victim, Siddhartha Balkrishna Samant (32), spent nearly Rs 52,000 to buy the goods from two conmen, only to realize that the laptop was a slab of stone and the iPhone, just a cake of soap. This is the third such incident in the last two-and-a-half months.

According to assistant inspector M G Bolkotgi, on Tuesday around 11 am, Samant, a resident of Kharadi, came to Viman Nagar to buy sweets, where the two conmen approached him in front of Khalsa dairy. The duo was carrying a branded laptop bag and two iPhones.

“One of them told him that they wanted to sell the items. They told him that they would sell him the items for Rs 52,000 as against the market price of over Rs 1 lakh. Samant fell for their offer,” said Bolkotgi.

The conmen then reportedly kept the laptop bag and the iPhone pouch in Samant’s car. “Then one of the conmen sat in the car with Samant, while his accomplice followed them on a scooter as they went to a Punjab National Bank ATM to withdraw money. Samant could withdraw only Rs 8,000 from the ATM. So, the conman asked Samant to take him shopping, where Samant would use his credit card to buy him stuff,” said Bolkotgi.

Samant then took the conman to a branded shoe store, said the police. “The conman, however, did not like anything there. They then went to a mall in Kalyani Nagar. Here, Samant bought a gold ring worth Rs 43,949 for the conman. After collecting the gold ring and Rs 8,000 cash, the duo left the spot on the scooter,” Bolkotgi said.

When Samant checked the laptop bag and the pouch in his car, he was shocked to see a stone slab and soap in them. He launched a search for the conmen, but it was too late. He then lodged a complaint at the Airport police station.

Both the suspects speak Hindi and are aged between 25 and 30 years.
