New Delhi Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, out on bail in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, was on Wednesday allowed by the Supreme Court to go abroad to fulfil his commitments as United Nations' Goodwill Ambassador and for his film shoot.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan gave the green signal to Dutt on his application to go abroad from January 16 to February 15 asking him to surrender his passport on return to the CBI's Special Task Force, Mumbai, by February 28.

Senior advocate Fali S Nariman told the court that as a consequence of being appointed as UN's Goodwill Ambassador on malnutrition, Dutt's presence was required in United States in the first week of February.

He said the Director General, Head of Observer Delegation to United Nations Economic and Social Council, has addressed a letter to Dutt in this regard.

The actor will also be needed for the shooting of his two new films – Luck and Lamha – in Bangkok, South Africa and United Kingdom, the advocate said.

Dutt, who was convicted and sentenced to six years imprisonment under Arms Act for possessing illegal weapons in connection with 1993 Mumbai blasts case, was granted bail after he filed an appeal against the verdict of the TADA court.

He was, however, absolved of the serious offence under the TADA.

Dutt, 50, has been regularly allowed to go abroad for his films after filing an affidavit stating that he would return to the country after completing his work.

While granting bail to the actor on November 27 2007, the court had directed him to surrender his passport and asked him not to leave the country without its permission.

The CBI had not opposed his bail maintaining that he was entitled for the relief since he was guilty of a less serious offence.

The Bollywood star, who was sentenced in July 2007, had spent 18 months in jail during the pendency of the trial.

Glorifying criminalization by Ravi on 15 Jan 2009

Another level of glorifying a criminal. Where are the morals of the people of this country? Are we sold out? Some day Dawood, Salem, Kasaab, Afzal are going to visit Sidhhivinayak, Masjids, Churches and they will be set free.

No Links to tewrrorists? by Ham on 15 Jan 2009

Can Mumbai attack happen with absolutely no local help? It is impossible. No one wants to find out who are the locals helped terrorists. I will not be surprised if some well known names come out if a proper enquiry has been made, I would be least surprised if Sanjay Dutt is one of them.

Munnabhai and his antics by Mahesh Chavan on 15 Jan 2009

In most of the law abiding countries, this chap would have been lost in oblivion and forgotten and ridiculed. It is pity that we Indians are so foolish to give this crook of one time so much of publicity that , now he is trying to enter the portals of Institutions for which lot of freedom fighters have contributed their lives. He should be made example of how we can be unforgiving for the kind of crime he was involved and not be dumb to talk about he being Munnabhai.

Criminal as Ambassador by Hemant on 14 Jan 2009

Is there a way we can write to UN not to nominate this criminal. He is convicted of crime against nation. He is out on bail. UN must be very desperate to nominate this kind of people for Ambassador. What next Dawood as Ambassador for ethics.

Sanjay Dutt by Paras Deo on 14 Jan 2009

Sanjay Dutt, UN Goodwill Ambassador !! by Dr.Ajay Kumar, England on 14 Jan 2009

Oh, come on. Give me a break. Is it some kind of a joke to appoint a covict, junkie and AK47 totting man to be a UN Goodwill Ambassador ? Aren't there any untainted Indians in India ? No wonder we in west do not take India seriously. And to offer him ticket to contest Loksabha poll ? I tink thereis something seriously wrong with India and Indians. No wonder Pakistani are giving short shrift to India

Sanjay Dutt by Chandra Pandey on 14 Jan 2009

Sanjay has paid his dues more than enough. I don't know the details of laws in his case but it is evident that he is not a threat to his own country. There are many other terror groups and terrorist individuals who need to be challenged and defeated. I say, "Let Muna Bhai go totally free."

filmy duniya by ris on 15 Jan 2009

Chandra Pandey, I am not surprised by your comment now I know jokes like Govinda, Jayaprada and all the other silly good for nothing stars become MP and do nothing for the country...just because of bollywood obessessed idiots like yourself.

SC ruling for Dutta by Krishna on 14 Jan 2009

It will be Pittty if Sanjay Dutt is given Visa to USA. He has criminal record of terrorist. And If US waves and gives visa to him it will reflect very badly on US as just nation. They have refused visa to NArendra Modi even though Modi does not have criminal record.

Are u out of your mind? by Salaam on 15 Jan 2009

Please don't let your religious sentiments make you ignore wrong doings of Modi. After all you will be answerable to God after your death for all you did and said in this world. Is Possessing a AK -47 is more criminal than KILLING thousands?
