EC issues notification for J-K by-elections

Jammu Election Commission on Monday issued the notification for holding of the elections on 11 seats of legislative council.

Officials said that as per the notification by-elections will be held on the three seats of the council, while as biennial elections are being held on the eight seats. Of the eight seats on which the biennial elections are being held, two of the seats are reserved for the Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh region. Four seats are from Jammu region, while two seats on which the biennial elections are being held are from Kashmir region.

Unlike the Rajya Sabha elections for which the election was through open ballot, election to the seats of upper house is being held through a secret ballot.

According to officials February 24 is the last date for filing of nominations for the vacant seats of upper house of state legislature while as the scrutiny of papers will begin on the next day. The last date for the withdrawal of elections is February 27 while as the elections are being held on March 7. Counting of votes will also be held on the same day.

With the issuance of notification for the council elections, political parties have begun the strategies for the elections.
