“With the official notification from the Ministry of Human Resources and Development yet to arrive, we have decided to defer the release of the list,” IIM-C director, Shekhar Chaudhuri said.

The institute sources said it had already prepared a list of students without including the OBC quota. Subrata Mitra, in-charge of admissions at IIM-C said that there would be a phased intake of students. The Postgraduate Diploma in Management, the core programme at IIM-C, has an intake of 300 students. The intake would be increased in phases from six per cent in the first year to 54 per cent in the third year, thereby accommodating the 27 per cent increase, officials said.

His counterparts in IIT-Kharagpur also share the same view. “We have to have more teachers,classes, laboratories and hostels. We are waiting for official communication from HRD ministry in this regard. Once we get that we can go ahead,” said IIT-Kharagpur registrar, D Gunasekaran.

The institute has plans of increasing its student intake in three years, keeping the number of general students constant while increasing the total intake by 9 per cent each year.

IIT-K has an intake of 895 students at the undergraduate level of which 693 are from the general stream. At the post-graduate level the intake is 1,159 in various programmes.

Indian Statistical Institute, another central education institute in the state, is also not bothered about the quota. “We have very limited seats, around 30 in the B Statistics and 20 in the B Maths courses,” said deputy director B B Bhattacharya. Even though the admission criteria had been relaxed to a certain extent, they do not get enough students. But if we get an order from the ministry we will definitely make room for more students, he said
