ARD Principal Secretary Dilip Chakraborty said: “It may happen. Though 85 per cent of West Bengal’s poultry population has not been affected, eggs might be a problem. Supply from Andhra Pradesh and other southern states has been stopped.”
According to official figures, the demand for eggs in the state is about 850 crore, annually. However, the production is limited to 300 crore eggs each year. The rest, about 550 crore, are availed from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and other southern states.
The department is not sure as how soon supplies can be resumed. “Once culling, mopping and sanitation work is over, only then can we resume supplies,” Chakraborty said.
Bird flu has affected the supply of processed chicken and poultry from the state’s organised farms too. “About 150 organised farms supply chicken to Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa. Processed chicken is supplied as far as New Delhi. But these supplies have also been halted,” he added.
