Replying to supplementaries in Rajya Sabha during Question Hour, Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said 78,577 MW electricity generation capacity will be added during the XIth Five Year Plan (2007-12) Period.
The country had added 54,000 MW generation capacity during the last 15 years (8th, 9th and 10th Plans), he said adding the target for the XIth Plan does not include captive power plants being set up by industries.
"By 2012, on demand electricity will be available," he said.
When Najma Heputallh (BJP) sought to know if the Indo-US Civilian Nuclear cooperation would not be needed if electricity on demand would be available on 2012, Shinde said "the country needs nuclear power (for its future energy needs)."
He said the civilian nuclear cooperation with US was initiated by BJP when it was in power and the UPA concluded this process.
The Government, he said, proposes to introduce a restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (APDRP) in the XIth Five Year Plan to cut transmission and distribution losses.
The APDRP was launched in 2002-03 with the objective of encouraging reforms, reducing aggregate technical and commerical loss and improving quality of supply of power.

Its a wonderful assurance. We wish it is accomplished. When Morarji Desai came to power in 1977, he had assured drinking water to all in next five years. What has actually happened is there for everyone to see. Our leaders will earn more respect, if they give such statements/assurances in the beginning of their term.

It is a well intended political statement. When Morarji Desai came to power, he assured drinking water to all in five years. The results are there for everyone to see. Our leaders will perhaps be respected more if they just tell us as to what are we (the nation) going to achieve during their current term.
Hope sustains life. It is sure the generation which brought freedom to India, will not be there to see the "Electricity on Demand in 2012".At least day dreaming is better than no dreams at all. Previously PM dreamt of making Mumbai as Shanghai, the result is known to entire nation and now after selling the loan waiver dream to farmers, minister of power does not want to lag behind.
India has all the resources today, that if put to use appropriately, will solve its energy needs not only in a couple of years but for almost in perpetuity. Unfortunately, Indian 'political leaders' only dream about looting the country even by mortgaging India's interests and selling fake 'dreams' to the gullible public.
If Cong govt fails to bring nuclear power due to blackmailing by the Chinese spies and later if NDA win and bring the nuclear powered electricity, what do we do with these barking dogs?
Power Saver if it saves 30% of power they should be used by everybody. Use power savers (German Tech.) and solar panels etc and reduce the demand to the level of supply. Use more battery backups to coop with intraday changes in demand and supply Power Saver 25% Solar Panel 25% Battery backup 25%. Umm its good idea to save power as much as possible.
If it can be done by 2009, then Y wait for 2012, Act not wait, Jago Man Mohan Pyare :)
Use power savers (German Tech.) and solar panels etc and reduce the demand to the level of supply.
And, if the government gave all the right encouragement and legislated conducive policies to adopt solar energy to generate electricity by all who are in a position to, that alone would save India from any 'sell-out' to any foreign power under one pretext or the other.
