New Delhi Home Minister P Chidambaram today said India's trade with China is booming and there is nothing to envy the country, rather it should be emulated.

He said China and India are two large countries and Beijing challenges New Delhi to compete with it in equal terms.

"We should not fear competition from China. There is no reason to envy China. If at all, we should try to emulate China," he said addressing the 7th Northeast Business Summit organised by the Ministry of DoNER.

Despite what is reported in some sections of media about growing competition between India and China, trade between India and China is booming and China has become India's largest single trading partner, he said.

Chidambaram's statement came amidst a controversy over the detention and subsequent release of Indian businessmen in Yiwu, China, following a business dispute.

India also had issued an advisory asking its traders to "stay away" from the busy commodity centre.

Indian diplomat S Balachandran was also "manhandled" at a court and fainted as he tried to secure the release of the two traders on December 31, prompting India to lodge a protest.

"China, a competitor, challenges us to compete in equal terms," Chidambaram said.

The Home Minister said if China can build world class road, India should be able to build world class road and if they can build world class railway line, right up to Tibet, India should be able to build world class railway line across the Northeastern states.

"And that is how it will be, it should be," he said.

WHY SHOULD EMULATE CHINA? by Indianglobal on 06 Jan 2012

Why doesn´t India built world class rail and roads itself before China do! what are the drawbacks! u could have spared to copy China especially emu, that bird could be able to run within a limit, but the tiger has the running power ofcourse than that, when u are clear from corruption under which a huge amount of resources are hidden to execute ur intention of developing infrastructure of India. The same way it was once expressed by the former PM Vajpayee too. And waiting for China to execute India´s plannings, which are not at all consistence for a minister to copy China.

Emulate China ... by s subramanyan on 06 Jan 2012

I am happy the Home Minister emphasised on emulating China and also said that if China laid rai lines uptop even Tibet, we would also be laying rail connections along the North eastern States. This statement fulfills most aspiration of our people and also importantly repaiors the omission of the organisers of the seminar to invite both West Bengal and Indian Railway representatives.

Very right minister. Now act. by Sudhir Kamath on 06 Jan 2012

Let us emulate China by using diffrent types of visa for residents of Tibet Hongkong.

DO not only talk, be in action by Raghu on 06 Jan 2012

Dear Mr. Chidambaram, Please help us with your explanation on how to build world class roads and railways, when people like you minting money from the existing wealth of India which is supposed to be used for the development of Better infrastucture.

Finally one big statement of wisdom from UPA by rajkumar on 06 Jan 2012

It is true people voted congress and UPA to power to really drive the privatization and create wealth for Indians. But somewhere some of the ministers started making big bucks and also dragged down the Congress Vision. Our advice back to PC - prosecute all the MPS, MLAs, Ministers who have looted the country and lock them up for 25 years. Show us this results and then start the process of liberalization in FDI etc. Indians in millions will come out and support UPA.

CHIDAMBARAM IS RIGHT by RAKESH KAPUR on 06 Jan 2012

WHEN MR.CHIDAMBARAM ASKS FOR INDIA TO EMULATE CHINA, HE IS VERY RIGHT IN SAYING SO. WE HAVE GOT THE BEST OF INTELLECT,TALENT AND MANPOWER. ALL IT NEEDS IS A STRONG WILL POWER AND A CLEAR CUT RESOLVE.

If not traders but politicians were to be treated the same way? by shanthanu on 06 Jan 2012

I would like to ask Mr.Chidambaram would he have the same view instead of S.Balachandran if one of his ministry men were handled the same way? He sounds rhetoric at the cost of India put to shame by Shanghai.
