The Delhi Police is procuring 629 motorcycles, out of which 250 will be Pulsars, according to sources.
The motorcycles will be used by investigating officers of Sub-Inspector level, sources said.
Though the proposal was mooted a year back, it got approved by the Home Ministry recently, and the Delhi Police placed the order for the motorcycles with the Director General Supply and Disposal last week, the sources said.
The motorcycles are expected to hit the roads in a fortnight.
The Delhi Police has 1,542 motorcycles, out of which 569 are with the traffic police and 973 at local police stations.
The south district has the highest number of motorcycles at 162, while the northeast, one of the most crime-prone districts, has 68 motorcycles.
Each police station is allotted six or seven motorcycles, which cater to around 70 or 80 officers. The investigating officers usually have to travel on their own even when they are on official work.
“It is not just to ensure that our staff reaches the crime spot faster, but also to make sure that the investigating officers can travel free of cost,” said a senior Delhi Police official.
The Delhi Police will also get 14 additional riot-control vehicles, known as Vajra.
The proposal for procurement of two bullet-proof scorpio cars and one bullet-proof ambassador cars has also got a nod.
These are also expected to be added to Delhi Police fleet soon, sources said.
The Delhi Police had recently allocated 250 motorcycles exclusively for traffic police to patrol accident-prone areas.
Another 121 motorcycles were relocated from districts and added to the PCR fleet, the sources added.
