Mumbai, March 23: England and Australia cannot come to terms with India's growing importance in world cricket, according to Sunil Gavaskar, the International Cricket Council's cricket committee chief.

"Gone are the days when two countries, England and Australia, had the veto power in international cricket, even though the dinosaurs, still trying to voice their prejudiced opinions in the media, may not open their eyes and see the reality," Gavaskar wrote in a syndicated newspaper column published on Sunday.

"The cricketing world has found that India has no longer a diffident voice in the international cricketing community, but a confident one that knows what is good for its cricket, and will strive to get it," the former India captain wrote.

"What may have worried these people was the manner in which India defended its player Harbhajan Singh on the 'racist' allegation made against him.

"When all the technology in the world was unable to prove that he had indeed said anything, these guys, especially those in Australia, having got so used to getting it their way, were unable to stomach it."

India lost the heated four-test series in Australia 2-1 but won the one-day tri-series after beating the hosts 2-0 in the finals.

India, the financial centre of the global game, is currently second in the ICC test rankings.

After Indian board chief Sharad Pawar was awarded the ICC presidency for 2010, the shortlisting of Inderjit Bindra as a possible successor to Malcolm Speed as ICC chief executive did not go down well with the British and Australian press, Gavaskar added.

"As soon as Mr. Bindra's name was announced there were a flurry of articles in England and Australia that giving him the job would put too much power in India's hands," he said.

Gavaskar does it by Afroz Ashrafi on 24 Mar 2008

Financial status of the cricket board cannot determine the quality of cricket and abuse it much the same way as yhe oz or eng for that matter did for a long time . Gavaskar has been fairly inconsistent in his comments and commentary . can i remind him that when umpire Benson wanted the confirmation of the controversial catch from Ponting it was Gavaskar blaring , if i could quote though the words may not be exactly the same , it went something like this , oh , i have never seen , heard a fielding captain being asked for the confirmation of the catch . This is utter nonsense , this is ridiculous.unquote , what gavaskar did not know was the agreement between the two playing captains that the verdict of the captain will deemed to be final in the event of any doubt or confusion . Yes .Gavaskar has been the heard voice without desrving it as there are a barrage of players of his calibre who have taken recourse to silence or obscruity .

gavaskar by siddharth on 24 Mar 2008

gavaskar is reverse racist of the worst sort.it is he who cannot sromache anything good about countries like aus,eng etc. he make me sick and ashamed of being an indian with his openly racist and prejudiced views. he tries too hard to break away from the shame of having being ruled by the whites for so many years.

Doesn't Matter by Patriot on 24 Mar 2008

Forget the identity, what he is saying is ture. He shouldn't have said in this way. But Gavsakar is a racist and an Idiot.

So now he said nothing by Brian on 24 Mar 2008

The Proof was in the Indian's teams management saying he said something different to the allegations and Harbhajan Singh steadfastly defending that what he said was not what the Australian's thought but something different, either way Australia is still better than India.

Harbajan is a Brat by Patriot on 24 Mar 2008

I don't agree with all of your views but yes, Australia is still slightly better than India and Hrabajan is a brat. he should be banned from cricket. I love India and its people but that doesn't mean I am narrowminded as many others who say everything our country does is right and everything that others do is wrong. Harbajan is a shame to our country and I feel ashamed that he is one the ones who represent our country.
