English footballer charged with sexual assault

London Notts County footballer Lee Hughes, who was arrested last month after an allegation of sexual assault, has been charged, according to his club.

The League One striker was arrested after police were called to the team’s hotel in Croydon, south London, on December 3.

he 35-year-old was taken into custody following the alleged incident at the Aerodrome Hotel involving a woman the night before his team’s FA cup fixture against Sutton United.

“Notts County can confirm that striker Lee Hughes has, on Monday, been charged in relation to an alleged incident in December of last year,” the Daily Mail quoted a statement released on the club’s website as saying.

“The club will be making no further comment on this matter,” the statement read.

Hughes was released on bail after his arrest in December.
