English-speaking classes for PMC employees

Pune, December 31 Don’t be surprised if the Class III and even Class IV employees of the Pune Municipal Corporation suddenly starts conversing with you in Queen’s English in the New Year. Because from January 4, PMC is all set to impart lessons of spoken English to its employees from Class I to Class IV category.

Experts are being roped in to unfold the English language. “It’s an experiment taken up by the PMC to teach English to its staff in one hour. The Kokate English classes has expertise in teaching English in one hour and has been engaged in the special initiative of the PMC,” civic labour officer Nandkumar Jagtap said. However, the Class I employees will have to take up lessons along with the participants from Class II, Class III and Class IV category.

The first of the training course will carry out coaching for 800 PMC employees, 400 in each batch, at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Cultural Hall in Mangalwar Peth. The performance of the first training programme will decide on the continuity of it, Jagtap added.

PMC has kept “Class V cleared” as minimum educational criteria and ability to read at least Marathi for the employees interested to take up the English language lessons. The staff taking lessons will be considered on duty during the training period, a PMC circular said.

The Kokate classes will be distributing booklets to all the participants for the purpose in the classroom during the one-hour training. It will provide the same at cheaper prices for those interested in buying them.

PMC has made it compulsory for all the participants to give feedback on the training programme.

Also, PMC will be conducting personality development training for its staff from January 4 to 17 which well enable the PMC staff to counter stress while performing their duties.
