Kuala Lumpur, February 16: In a fresh crackdown on ethnic Indians, Malaysian police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse over 200 protesters who tried to march to Parliament in defiance of a ban to give roses to Premier Abdullah Badawi to ‘seek justice’.

More than 100 people, including supporters and members of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) that has been spearheading anti-government protests against alleged mariginalisation of the community, were rounded up by police and all but six were later released.

Police had barricaded roads leading to Parliament house to prevent the rally which had been denied permission.

Taking a cue from 'Gandhigiri', the flower-clutching Indians, some of whom wore saffron T-shirts, attempted to gather at the Independence Square.

"The yellow flowers are a symbol of our cry for justice," a statement by Hindraf said while demanding the release of five of its leaders who have been held under the draconian Internal Security Act for taking part in a massive anti-government protest in November.

The six people detained today were sent to Pudu jail and will be charged for taking part in the march declared illegal by the government, Eshwari Wayathamoorthy, wife of Hindraf chief-in-exile P Wayathamoorthy said.

Wayathamoorthy's five-year-old daughter Vvaishnavvi had planned to walk to Parliament with some other children and Hindraf supporters to give flowers to Abdullah and also appeal for the release of her ‘five uncles’.

"My daughter and other children were kept in the car. We never expected police would fire water cannon and tear gas," Vvaishnnavi's mother said.

Gandigiri by swarn sharma on 17 Feb 2008

Gandhigiri is vary good and we should respect but Lord Krishna said if u can achieve ur objective with peace(basically with Gandhigiri)u must be prepared for DADAGIRI so what our Hindu brothers did was right but what they received in return the whole world nows. Now the solution is that we should retrun them in the same language which they under stand.Tit for tat.Once late Lal Bhadhur Shastriji said " Shanti is enough old and her younger sister Jwala (Perchand devi)is there to take her place. I appeal to my hindu brothers follow any of the above said rule, Krishna or Shastri victory will be your.thanks

Malaysias racial politics by sheen on 16 Feb 2008

I am an Indian and lived in Malaysia for a year. Its a beautiful country but racially divided. Majority Malays/Muslim population take up 90% of government Jobs and allocate itself the maximum resources for education, business, housing etc. The Malaysian Chinese are primarily a business community and they look down on Tamil Indian as dark skinned untrustworthy people- Tamils were taken to Malaysia by the Brits as plantation workers and were left in remote plantations . These plantations were remote and they lost all contact with theri families in India. It has been over 200 years ..and it is sad that Malaysia views their Muslim ethnic group as Sons of Soil ( Bumiputra) and the rest as less deserving of opportunities. In India we have Nepali immigrants, Chiense immigrants ( in calcutta) and a whole set of other groups who arrived more recently. They were granted citizenship are considered equal to other Indians. To me Malaysia policies are Just plain disgusting racism. Any country that corners opportunity for its ethnic majority group is an apartheid nation.

Follow the shiv sena siperemo by Syed Zainulabedin on 16 Feb 2008

Indians in Malaysia should follow the directives of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackary and be loyal to the country where u lives. If they wanna fight for justice they should come under the banner of Indian and should name their outfit as Indians Right Action Force not Hindus Right Action Force.

Muslim double standards by Jitu on 16 Feb 2008

Syed, how about following the other directives of bal thackeray wherein he has called for ilegal muslim migrants from bangladesh to be thrown out and called for indian muslims to put their country before thwir religion.Loyalty to the country where they live is fine but not when the muslim government discriminates against hindu's on the basis of their religion. And compare the peacefull reaction of hindu's there with the hooliganism and voilence that muslims here resort to without any provocation, an excellent example of which is the violence in calcutta against talima nasrin. This was supposed to be an agitation against nandigram but muslim organisations hijacked the event and took advantage to resort to violence protesting against taslima. Muslims here and everwhere must realise that they do not have any right to force peole from other religions to follow islamic rules (like in saudi where non muslim women are forced to wear the burqa).

Why So Casual to Hindus by Ramesh Chandra Anand on 16 Feb 2008

Why everybody including Indian government is so casual to the inhuman treatment being given by the most liberal Muslim country-Malaysia.Hindus should also be treated as human-beings.I think Hindus in India should first start respecting Hindus, only then the others may also follow.

N.Indians in Mumbai and Tamils in Malaysia and Srilanka by karan on 16 Feb 2008

If descendants of North Indians who helped transformation of deserted islands into today's Bombay with the money contributed from exports by all the states are not citizens with equal rights, can the Indians who went to Malaysia and Sri Lanka to help the British Empire and enjoyed privileged status then compared to indigenous people, claim equal status now with the indigenous people. Mahatma Gandhi recognized the double standard Indians apply when he was discriminated against by the whites in South Africa and came back to India and worked to remove untouchability from the society.
