Bhopal, November 15: Plagued by dissidence, Congress is going all out to woo back rebels who failed to make it to the candidates' list, with AICC leader Digvijay Singh citing the example of President Pratibha Patil, who was ‘denied a ticket’ in 1998 but later ‘rewarded’ with the nomination for the top post.

Addressing a poll meeting at Panchsheel Nagar on Friday night, Singh, in an apparent bid to placate former MLA P C Sharma who was denied the party ticket from Bhopal South-West seat said, "Congress had denied the party ticket in 1998 even to President Pratibha Patil.

"But, less than a decade later she was rewarded with the nomination for the post of country's President because of her consistent loyalty to the party."

He urged Sharma, who was considered a strong contender for the seat, not to feel let down on being denied the ticket and asked him to work for the party to ensure the defeat of the communal forces.

To woo back candidates who have filed their nominations as Independents on being denied the party ticket, Union Commerce and Industries Minister Kamal Nath recently issued an appeal asking them to rally behind the party so that it can form a government in Madhya Pradesh.

Following an appeal, a known supporter of Kamal Nath, Asif Zaki, withdrew his nomination from one of the seats in Bhopal.

However, the Congress has expelled former ministers Mukesh Nayak and Balendu Shukla and 33 others from the party for six years ahead of the polls.

If you behae and pay due respects like Patibha, you will be rewarded like a nice dog with a bone. by Joosus on 16 Nov 2008

This is a great lesson in discipline to Kangraceys who are not behaving. They must know that by behaving properly and paying obeisance to the great secloolar statesmen of Kangrace party like Soniya Saint, Peeyanka Cataholic, Raul Commboodian, Margaret Alva, Oscar Fernandes, Goa education minister, Rajasekar Reddy blest in Joosis Kriste, Shivraj Patil waggy dogg, and others, they will also get their reward for being nice pet dogs. See Pratiba got such a juicy bone for her loyalty and services, from a small kennel to the Prez house. Bow wow, wag wag wag.

Even president by Vikram Reddy on 15 Nov 2008

Wow. I never knew that it was ok to denigrate even the institution of president just to save the image of "nehru gandhi" dynasty. But then ... what do you expect from a family which gets authority without accountability.

Mr Digvijay singh is right. This is how Congress high command ensures servility and sychopancy amoung its leaders . and pratibha is a good example.

Denial of Ticket by Varinder on 15 Nov 2008

There is a difference between denial and selling ticket. Reason could be either. Margaret Alva has not become stupid overnite to disclose such a startling matter. There is no smoke without fire.

Bad example by Gopal on 15 Nov 2008

You should see the caliber. Prathiba Patil is no Margaret Alva. What choice Prathibha patil, a nobody has vs the personality and constituency of Margaret Alva? Margaret Alva can be an asset to any party unlike lack lusture Prathiba Patil.

Even Prez was denied ticket once by SS on 15 Nov 2008

Comment made by Mr. Digvijay Singh about president Pratibha Patil is derogatory to the post of President of India. His comment implies that Patil was unfit for a party ticket in 1998 and still she could become the President just because she was very loyal to the Congress and its leadership.

Prez denied ticket by C2 on 15 Nov 2008

Narasimha rao was denied ticket for 1991 parliament elections on the ground that he was medically unfit to become an MP; but after the elections he was fit enough to be PM for 5 years. From this it is evident that the Congress feels that one who is fit to be MP need not be fit for higher posts and those fit for higher posts need not be fit to seek people's mandate. why did Digvaijay Singh not quote Narasimha Rao also as example? Only becos the nehru family hates him for not being a loyal boot licker of the family?

Sir,What an explanation, what justification?Does the Congress leaders want to prove that a person unfit for a party ticket could "improve" within aperiod of eight years to the extent of being nominated and elected to the country's highest office?Or do they mean that selecting candidates for public Office or legislature/Lok Sabha or other higher offices is not based on merit and on otherfactiors.or is it a matter of members propose and paarty President disposes? What a sad state our Polity has fallen into.

About President Patil by Senthilkumar on 15 Nov 2008

Does he mean to say that Mrs.Patil was nominated to President's post on account of her loyalty to Congress and not account of her capability as a President?
