The experts, who are on a ten-day visit to the city, will also study working of sewerage treatment plants (STPs) and the working of the industrial units. Headed by Dr Tapish Nandi, the experts will visit common effluent treatment plant of electroplating units, STPs of the Municipal Corporation at Bhattian, Balloke and Jamalpur.
The NEERI is also studying zero-discharge technique proposed by the P Ram committee. The High Court has asked NEERI to study and suggest ways to reduce pollution levels in the Buddha Nallah. The state pollution control board has paid Rs 22.5 lakh to the institute to get the job done.
When Newsline contacted Babu Ram, senior environmental engineer, PPCB, he confirmed the visit of NEERI scientists. “They are conducting their research independently and will submit their report to the pollution board and also to the High Court soon.” The high court has asked the institute to submit its report with in two months, but the actual time for the study is yet to be ascertained.
The team will be in city till May 20 and may inspect any industry anytime.
T R Mishra, President, Dyeing Units Association, said, “All our units have proper effluent treatment plants. However, the experts may suggest us some more changes and we are ready to do follow suggestions in letter and spirit. But we have doubts on zero discharge, which may be cleared after the visit by the team.”
Joginder Kumar added,” We are not yet convinced about zero-discharge idea though a private company has offered to set up plant ranging at the cost between Rs 25 and 45 lakh. The NEERI scientists will be telling the actual viability of the project.”
