The party opposed reservation on the basis of religion, saying “it was totally prohibited in the Constitution” and slammed Home Minister Shivraj Patil for favouring quota for minorities in educational institutions and government jobs.
“This comment from the Home Minister is political brinkmanship at its worst to secure votebank, which the BJP outrightly rejects,” party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters in New Delhi.
He said there has been some sort of national consensus on the constitutional prohibition for providing reservation on the basis of religion for the last 60 years.
“We demand the Prime Minister to clarify the Government position on this issue,” he added.
Patil on Wednesday had said the government was exploring the possibility of providing reservation for minorities in educational institutions and government jobs. However, hours later, HRD Minister Arjun Singh said there was no such move.
“There is a comical farce going on between Home Minister and HRD Minister which also requires Prime Minister’s intervention,” Prasad said.
The BJP spokesperson also took objection Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal’s reported remarks that there was a need to address the cause of terrorism and the sense of injustice which is promoting it.
“Sibal is entitled to make his views. But when as a minister he makes a comment which is in substance similar to what Pakistan says on Kashmir terrorism, then it is a matter of concern,” he said.

Reservation is a poor policy as well as a self-defeating strategy if the upliftment of the down-trodden is concerned. As a stop-gap arrangement this was implemented in the early days but was expected to be replaced by more equitable implementation of social policies. Reservation pits the 'benefited' against the 'opponent' and can be dangerous for the social cohesion, particularly if such a policy is implemented on the basis of religion. Can the government confidently say that the fundamental rights of the minorities or majority for that matter are protected ? When that can not be guaranteed, can adding some additional rights for someone make any difference ? Instead, the government should ensure 'law and order' and provide infrastructure for all to develop. The world has roles for all people, of different calibre and avocation. Equality is a myth but equal opportunity has to be an implemented fundamental right.
Perhaps congress will learn the lesson when it will be totally wiped out of power. Perhaps congress wants all hindus to support BJP?
Regarding terrorism what Sibbal has said is sheer nonsense ! Terrorism is promoted by Muslim ffundamentalists who believe that by killing idolaters and non-believers they would be complying with Allah's commandments for which they would be rewarded with elevation to a higher place of existence where life would be an eternal bliss. Thus even if the Kashmir and Palestinian problems are solved to the entire satisfaction of Muslim separatists Jihadi killings would continue. On the material plane, the terrorists seek to establish a global Caliphate which has no room for any other religion. What explains terrorism in Philippines (Mindanao), Russia (Chechnya), China (Xingkiang) etc. which have nothing to do with Kashmir or Philippines ? Such a Caliphate would be like former Afghanistan when ruled by the Taliban where people would be denied of TV, fine arts, performing arts, Internet etc. It would be like transporting them to Stone Age. Thus what Sibbal talks is pure and unadulterated nonsense.
Mr Misra, You appear to be a well read person, and I am sure you know the genesis of the word "PAKISTAN". Just to remind you, the name was coined by one Chaudhuri Rehmat Ali, and it was based on the concept of an Islamic empire stretching from Morocco to Indonesia. Viewed against this background, your statement. "...even if the Kashmir and Palestinian problems are solved to the entire satisfaction of Muslim separatists...[etc]", is entirely correct: the Islamic imperialists will not be satisfied till the formation of the "empire" is achieved. And then, they would try to expand further, to include China, Russia, Philippijhes, Australia and so on and on, till the whole world is Muslim. Therefore, there is no point in conceding ANYTHING to the Muslims. All we can hope for at present is some sort of modus vivendi, and maintenance of the status quo.

Reservation policy has done more long term damage to India than anything else. Instead of uniting us as Indians it has divided us on the basis of caste and religion. Only beneficiary of this lunatic policy are members of political class. While they have benefited out of this in the short term, in the end the nation will be the net looser.

Reservation based on religion or caste brings nothing good to the country, instead try and help the poor but talented people to come up with financial benefits and education and recognise their talent.
it seems congress has taken over the job done by muslim league before partition. it is taking hindus for granted. hindus suffered at the hands of muslim rulers and again at the hands of britishers because of their divide and rule policy. whatever hindus are today is because of their hard work. the policy of congress to provide reservation on the basis of religion should be resnted by one and all.
