New Delhi The Election Commission issued notice to Petroleum Minister Murli Deora for his remarks on effecting a fuel price cut after the conclusion of assembly elections next month.

Opposition BJP had approached Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami over the issue on Wednesday contending that the announcement amounted to violation of the Model Code of Conduct enforced by the Commission.

Remarks on oil price cuts not made ‘knowingly': Deora

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said he had not made the announcement ‘knowingly’.

"I am upset over these reports. I would never do something knowingly," Deora said.

The Election Commission has sought an explanation from Deora on his remarks on fuel price cuts, following complaints by the BJP, which said the minister's statement amounted to violation of the model code of conduct.

"I have been in public life for 45 years. I have fought nine elections and never been issued any notice before," Deora said.

Asked whether he has written a letter to Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Deora said, "These are things I would not like to discuss."

On fuel price cut, he said, "We are trying to do our best."

Deora also said there was a contradiction between statements of BJP leaders V K Malhotra and Arun Jaitley.

With a drop in prices of crude oil in the international market, "there is an expectation that prices need to be reduced. I am also of the opinion that they should be reduced and that will happen after December 24," Deora said on Tuesday.

Kudos to seclallular Deora for defeating communal EC which is trying to stop win of non Hindhoos by Sec Lallu Lar on 26 Nov 2008

Well done Deora ji, nice slap on the face of Election Commission and their communal friends the Hindhoos. Under blessing of Soniya ji Saint Ghandey of Vatican, you have bravely fought back against Communal forces trying to stop you from winning election for the sake of Muslim and Christian. Joosus and Alla and Mao will bless you.

Petrol price by rammohan on 26 Nov 2008

What these people, Deora, PM and of course the cunning Sonia and rahul want is create an impression that EC and BJP is not allowing them to reduce the price of Oil.Where are these geneous people for the alst two years when prices fo all commodities are sky rocketing. Some dirty trick like this will be treated by electoral white wash this time and Congress crooks are going to learn a lesson never before. Ultimately people and the young ones now enrolled in the electoral rolls will give them the real reply in the election. Moiley's and Sanghvi's will be trounced this time. Rammohan

there is nothing wrong in the minister's 'sstatement, in fact it is a great relief for all suffering on account of the high oil price.

Is Mr. Deora naive? by (Dr.) B.N. Anand on 26 Nov 2008

Though this statement of Mr. Deora will be welcomed by the general public, but then this came at the wrong time and perhaps with a motive to influence the trend in voting in state assembly elections. He could have made the statement 15 days earlier as the trend in falling crude prices was very much evident when the prices started sliding from 147 dollars a barrel to nearly 50 dollars. Since the reduced prices were not going to be effective even if the govt. wanted, what was the need to promise to reduce the prices after the elections? What to speak of political leaders , even a commom man can see through the game and for sure the code of code has been violated. After all, Mr. Dera can not be naive to pretend that he did not realise the importance of his statement, despite his long record of being in politics and fought so many elections. The election commission has taken the right step and for once the congress party will be on back foot.

Deora should be punnished by John on 26 Nov 2008

This cheater should be punnished. He is not ready to reduce the price according to the price drop in the international market. He just wanted to influence the state election results. People in the country are suffering due to high transportation expense of goods.

Know the facts first. by Daniel on 26 Nov 2008

Well perhaps you don't know, he is not in a position to reduce the prices once EC has declared the election dates for states assembly elections, had he done that it would be a bigger crime than one mentioned now.

don't fool people by kirit shah on 26 Nov 2008

congress is trying to fool the general public. pm recently said that there is no thinking of reducing the petrol prices. often different ministers including deora had said so. in parliament he had recently told that within 10 days the prices will be reduced.they haven't done so.politicians have always enough reasons to forget what they have promised.now it is said that he has written a letter to sonia for giving permission to reduce the prices. in full public glare he is making the mockery of the government. he could have written to the pm. this proves the theory that pm has no power. it is only sonia who has the power. sonia gandhi is not the real mohandas gandhi who always stood for the truth. sonia does no proud to our government. sorry for we- the citizens of india. deora u have done the wrong thing. ec could also have given u permission but u decided not to go to ec but to press and sonia. people r watching u and ur congress.

petrol prices by balakrishnan nair on 26 Nov 2008

In my option the petrol should go down at least by 15 rupees per litre and so the diesel. It is ultimately affecting the poor by way of transport and other essential items. govt should look into the possibilities petrol / diesel without any loss of time

Delayed and motivated action by Rajendra Nath Pathak on 26 Nov 2008

Deora has only indicated that oil prices would be cut in future... something that should have been done long back as prices of oil at international platform have been falling for the past several weeks.. they have fallen to almost 1/3rd level. So why this step was not taken earlier! In fact the PM had said sometime back that the prices will not be cut. Why now ? Does it not smell fishy ? If EC has taken note of this action of Congress, it is in order.
