Express exclusive: I had to virtually gatecrash to meet panel head, says Nair

Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair today said he had had to “virtually gatecrash” to meet the head of one of the committees that was looking into the controversial ISRO-Devas deal — this, Nair said, could not be described as an opportunity given to him to present his case before the panel.

Nair was responding to remarks made by Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office V Narayanasamy that he was “misleading” the nation by saying that he had not got an opportunity to defend himself. The Pratyush Sinha committee report, parts of which were made public on Saturday night, mentions the meeting between Nair and Sinha.

“We were sent a few questions (by the Pratyush Sinha committee). I responded to that and sought a personal hearing to clarify my position. But I did not get the date... Once I learnt Sinha happened to be in the Delhi office of ISRO and I virtually gatecrashed to meet him,” Nair said at the Idea Exchange programme at The Indian Express office today.

“We met for about half an hour. Half the time went in exchanging pleasantries. I was asked to give clarifications on a few points which I sent within the next 24 hours. Meeting one person of the committee at an individual level is not the same thing as presenting your case before the full panel,” he said.

Nair and three other scientists have been debarred from taking any government position for their alleged role in a space agreement involving the lease of S-band radio waves to a private company by ISRO’s corporate arm Antrix Corporation.

Nair said he was prepared to take full responsibility for his actions. “If the government comes to the conclusion that the acts of ‘omission and commission’ as pointed out by the Pratyush Sinha committee are a crime, I am ready to be hanged. Tell me I have committed a grave crime and hang me. But at least follow the process. The Pratyush Sinha committee recommended that action should be taken under the Pension Rules or any other rules. I would like the government to tell us which rules have been followed,” he said.

He said the manner in which the government had gone about in the case had sent a “wrong message to the scientific community”.

Scientist or Politician ? by B Kumar on 07 Feb 2012

It is disappointing to see Madhavan Nair react like any cornered politician. Why is he hiding behind the " scientific community" label and how is he authorised to speak on behalf of them ? Scientific community is also human and prone to errors of commission and omission. Either he has not realised yet or pretends not to understand, he is fast losing backers as all emerging evidence is making him look more and more culpable.

what is it that Govt wants by uck on 07 Feb 2012

Murder of Scientific community by Lalus by BG Subhash on 07 Feb 2012

Why is the govt doing this? I am baffled. IE should go deeper into this , perhaps, have an in depth talk on the subject with Mr Nair and produce the nair`s version. If what Nair is saying is true ,then this govt needs to be taught a lesson by the scientific community.Real happenings behind the curtain must be exposed. I suggest that on any designated week all scientific community must wear black badge and air the difference the community have with both bureaucracy and political establishment. TV channels and print media must help this community, otherwise Lalus, and rajas will parade the accomplishers on to the street and for all their own omissions and commissions will not hesitate to murder this community!

Failure in Governance due to Corruption by bukum on 07 Feb 2012

The present Govt has lost so much credibility that in the ISRO case the public has started thinking Govt is trying to shield some of their corrupt members by punishing innocents. This is a clear corollary from their treatment with Anna Team and Ramdev movement.

Vested interest of politicians in ISRO by sundaram on 07 Feb 2012

There seem to be a conspiracy hatched by Narayanaswamy and Radhakrishnan to defame and humiliate the renowned scientists for some unknown reasons which need to be investigated. Though Radhakrishnan was also a party in finalising the terms of the contract awarded to Devas, he was included in the Sinha Committee to defame his senior. The report only surmises losses based on assumption and had not found out any financial irregularities. Nair is open to investigation of his financial transactions which was not done. Narayanaswamys vindictive action had only brought further loss of money and prestige to India besides showing PM in poor light. This sort of political interference and witch hunting need to be probed to expose the politicians hand behind the episode to ensure freedom to scientists to do their work honestly. The complicity between Narayansswamys and Radhakrishnans need to be exposed.
