Patiala, February 21 The core group of Indian Ex-Services League, Punjab and Chandigarh, met at Patiala and took a serious note of the lack of adequate welfare measures for re-employed ex-servicemen in the Sainik Welfare Department.

The League charged the Punjab Sainik Welfare Department of not being vigilant about various reservations in recruitment of ex-servicemen during the past four years.

According to League general secretary Prabhjot Singh, the Punjab Government, in its notification dated June 19 2007, had made provision for employment of additional programme officers, computer assistants, gram rozgar sewaks/employment guarantee assistants in the Rural Development Department, but here was no mention of any reservation for ex-servicemen.

The core group of Ex-Services League has requested the Director of Sainik Welfare to be vigilant about such discrepancies and take remedial measures. It has also requested the director to streamline the working of the department so that ex-servicemen do not miss their chance of re-employment.

The League has also alleged that a large number of ex-servicemen re-employed in the department in Class IV cadres as sweepers, chowkidars, gardeners, et al are retiring as ad-hoc employees without pension, even after serving for 10 to 20 years.

Similarly JCO’s and honorary officers re-employed as welfare workers are now left with no channel of promotion, he alleged, adding that earlier they were promoted as assistant directors.

Singh said that officer ranks - Major’s and below, employed as assistant directors, who were earlier promoted as deputy directors are also not being promoted.

The League requested senior officials of the Punjab Government, handling the Sainik Welfare Department, to take measures to ameliorate the sufferings of ex-servicemen, re-employed in Sainik Welfare Department, so that they are mentally prepared to look after the welfare of ex-servicemen, widows and their dependents for whom the department is meant for.
