Mumbai, February 4: Amitabh Bachchan's home was targeted by vandals in the backdrop of Raj Thackeray questioning the star's loyalties to Maharashtra while the Navnirman Sena leader faced charges of encouraging attacks on North Indians in the state.

A day after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena(MNS) activists clashed with Samajwadi party workers, attacked two theatres screening Bhojpuri films and assaulted north Indian taxi drivers and vendors, the Centre asked the state Government to tackle the situation in all seriousness and take proper steps to maintain law and order.

After the war of words between Thackeray and Samajwadi MP Jaya Bachchan, who came to the defence of her husband, two motor-cycle borne youths threw glass bottles at Amitabh's 'Prateeksha' residence in Juhu late last night.

Amitabh, who was shooting in Jaipur, refused to comment but security at his two homes in Mumbai was stepped up.

Mumbai was also put on high alert and the situation was peaceful with no fresh incidents of violence being reported.

Samajwadi party general secretary Amar Singh adopted a two-pronged offensive against MNS chief Raj Thackeray. Singh first lodged an FIR against Thackeray in the wee hours accusing him of encouraging attacks on North Indians.

Later, Singh through his lawyer Pradeep Rai petitioned the Election Commission in Delhi demanding that MNS be de-recognised and barred from contesting elections since its leader "does not believe in Indian constitution".

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said stern action would be taken against the guilty because the violence should not spread. "There will be full protection for those living in Mumbai." Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati condemned the Mumbai violence while effigies of Raj Thackeray were burnt in Patna and Kolkata by angry protestors.

time to take serious action by Yogishri Oumkaar on 05 Feb 2008

A law should be enacted by the Parliament restricting people such as Raj Thackeray. This a clear case of misuse of the freedom of speech. Mr. Raj Thacheray should be debarred from politics itself. Is Mr. Raj Thacheray's agenda any different from that of Lashkar e toiba and Jaish? Certainly not. Millitant organizations like Lashkar and Jaish are operating from outside whereas people like Mr. Raj Thackeray are operating from within. Both are divisive forces. Its time to take serious action. Chhath is the most pious festival of the country. At least the political class should not make such statements.Chhath Puja is a scientific process of conserving the cosmic energy, balancing its flow, awakening the superhuman powers and transmitting the energy throughout the universe. Through the scientific method of Chhath, we can obtain the solar energy consciously and directly from Sun in greater proportions.Excerpts from http://www.freewebs.com/chhathpuja/scienceofchhath.htm

Making mountain of a molehill by arun on 05 Feb 2008

Who do we believe? Do we believe the Manthars of Electronic media or Marathi papers from Pune? The print media reports that there was no attack on Big B's house and Police have also confirmed this. Amar Singh's opinion does not count. I suggest we ask Big B for his opinion and I am sure that honest man as he is he will accept that he has not been a true Maharashtrian. No doubt that he is one person whom all Maharashtrian respect. At the same time there is a universal dislike for people like Mulayam, Abu Azmi and Amar Singh. I wonder what has made Amar Singh so popular with Big B. Can there be something more than mere canmaraderie.

Big B's house attacked by Media by vinayak on 05 Feb 2008

was the house really attacked? Or is media reporting rumours as true incidents. Maharastrians are whipping boys for (so called) secular media. Read `Sakal" newspaper today www.esakal.com. You may be able to read it if you have learnt Marathi after years of stay in Mumbai.

I was horrified to watch the beating of North Indians by Raj Thackarey's supporters. He (Raj) and his Criminal Marati supporters must be accountable and punished for their inhuman acts. They are just animals.
