Kanpur Upset over not getting a job through campus recruitment, a post graduate IIT student allegedly committed suicide in Kanpur by hanging himself. G Suman, a second year M-tech student hailing from Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room this afternoon, said Sanjay Govind Panday, Director of IIT Kanpur.

Suman, who was pursuing electrical engineering, was upset after he failed to get a job offer during a recent campus recruitment by several multi-nationals, Panday said.

He would rarely meet anyone and would lock himself in his room. However, when he did not come to the mess for breakfast and lunch on Saturday, his friends went to his room which was locked from inside.

They saw Suman's body hanging from the fan, Panday said adding he was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Panday said Suman had confided to his friends a number of times his disappointment over not getting a job due to the economic recession. "Even after studying so much, we are not able to get a job," he would say to his friends.

A special committee of professors has been set up to probe the incident, Panday said. Suman's family has been informed and the body sent for a post mortem. Police are investigating the case.

Understand the situation and be a part of that by Hari on 05 Jan 2009

It is really feel bad to receive such news as it is a common factor that even after spending a huge sum of amount, the students unable to get the expected jobs for which the recent economic problems also become a reason. Anyhow, whosoever may be they should understand that by hanging on a ceiling fan or some other way to die will not satisfy you or your family members. We should try to find out the way how to solve it or to overcome the weakness.

Nehru Family responsibility by Dhaval Mehta on 04 Jan 2009

Ignorance personified like Dr. Ramesh pretend to know history just abusing Nehru family. The bafoon doesn't seem to be knowing that the IITs are Pandit Nehru's gift to the nation. The spectacular growth of IT secotor in the country has much to do with the visionary decisions of Pandit Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi. While abusing that family Ramesh should educate himself that India is not a natural state. It's an artificial nation that has been held together for much of last five decades by the presence of Congress in its nook and corner. And the party has remained united around the family.

What kind of education system we have? by mohan on 04 Jan 2009

What kind of education system we have, we spare most of our time and energy in getting into so called prestigious colleges and degrees, thinking our lives will be cherished with those degrees, unfortunately it doesn't even help you live your life till you get the degree, how is this going to help us live our life better later. First ask them to teach the values of life before they call it as prestigious degree.

suicide is a medical problem by poovannan on 04 Jan 2009

the tendecy to commit suicide runs in families.in future a strong genetic correlation may be found. its unfortunate for the family of the individual but others should not lose sleep over it and start blaming the leaders/country etc. the suicidal tendencies should be noticed by family members and never taken lightly.one should never talk of committing suicide when facing problems in front of children and should never pressurise the students that all depends on their exams/interviews.this is becasue of the false ego of trying to be the best /get the best in everything.its rare to see a cricketer/footballer commiting suicide for not getting selected for national team.if u trace the few suicides among sportsmen it will be due to alcohol/drug abuse.there have been instances of fans commiting suicide on thier beloved heroes film bombing.persons wanting to commit suicide requires the flimsiest of excuses.there was a instance of suicide in favour of amarnath agitation.

Reply for Ramesh by Faisal on 04 Jan 2009

I cannot believe that you are an IITn. You too should hang your self on shame. People like you are a wate for this country. We tax payers spent our money for people like u. The bright IITns are getting good package around the world. Blame ur parents than blaming Nehru family

Dark future ahead by himanshu on 04 Jan 2009

Does Arjun Singh has any estimate of how many such cases can be there four years down the line?

he believed in the label and not in himself by ashok pai on 04 Jan 2009

this is sad state of affairs. first of all, his death made news because he was from iit. scores of other weak minded people commit suicide too without making it to the headlines. not to be sarcastic, but as a general commentary. we are not guaranteed a job, just because the time were boomng, whatever the reason of his suicide, i hope others learn that we cannot take anything for granted. we , in india have never had it this good. compared to our parents' generation, we are much better off, with job on offer even in recession. we might have to compromise and go on the lean path, and make a career path ourselves.

IITians by Atma Gandhi on 04 Jan 2009

IITians are from our lot and not from Other Panet. They have to face Reality of Markets and economy, unless media can create funds to Feed their overrated importance. They became hero in bubble, now Bubble is burst, so time for reality

Failed system contributed to suman's death by Dr Suresh on 04 Jan 2009

I fully agree with Dr Ramesh's. Nehru and indira contributed to our country's dismal performance since independence, they did not get the priorities right, failed to educate and provide with basic infrastructure like health, education, safe drinking water, roads, electricity, etc..... They maintained illetracy to their benefit, divided country on reional and caste basis to consolidate the vote bank. I feel very sad with Suman and feel the system has failed and has contribued to his unfortunate death.

Failing to get job, IIT student commits suicide by Pradeep Shetty on 04 Jan 2009

Stupid fellow, people like him should die only, he wasted goventment money. It shows that its just not enough being too intelectual, better some common sense.

Shame by Jacob on 03 Jan 2009

It is a shame that a student killed himself. Government should stop giving funds to IIT. They are of no use to the country other than the IITians who can earn good salary with out doing anything.

Campus Counciling by M V Chilukuri on 03 Jan 2009

I do not know why AP students succumb to pressure, especially at IITK. It happened once in 1999 and it seems the authorities have done nothing to improve the situation at IITs.All IIT undergraduates and postgraduates can be offered on campus research assistant/teaching assistant jobs before they get permanent jobs in public or private sector. Also, its high time the IIT academic staff prepare these graduate students to face the situation with humility and courage rather than desperation.Any student either graduate or postgraduate given proper counseling and guidance can develop self confidence and self belief rather than inability or helpless.

Errata by S P on 03 Jan 2009

I have been a student at IITK and would just like to point out that Director is Dr. S.G. Dhande not Panday ... please gets the names right.

SUPPORT FOR IIT'S by GEORGE on 03 Jan 2009

IF THIS STUDENT WAS VERY SMART WITH LITTLE WISDOM, HE WOULD NOT HAVE COMMITED SUCIDE. SUCIDE IS A MENTAL PROBLEM INHERITED FROM FAMILY TIES.PEOPLE LIKE HIM WHO ARE IIT'S CAN BE ENTERPRENOUS AND PROVIDE JOB FOR OTHER INDIANS. TODAY GOVERNMENT PROVIDE SUBSIDARY LOANS. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD HELP SUPPORT SUCH STUDENTS FOR THEIR BETTERMENT AND FOR THE NATION.

IIT campuses must understand JOB market and preach Knowledge as goal not job as one by Prakashkapila on 03 Jan 2009

IIT campuses must understand market and tell its students that IIT is not a ticket to riches, but only to higher knowledge level,Most of the over achievers in life have failed initially.Edison Einstien Newton never got a great life after thier education, they got it after they discovered something really great.Failure is part of success if the fight to succeed is not given up.Parents must also understand that market particularly job market does not work as they "think" it should.DiruBhai ambani did not study big studies but he acquired knowledge which made Bill Clinton spend 2 hours with him to learn.College educcation only gives fundamentals it does not ensure success,This is a reality.Only hardwork, right application of knowledge gives success.

Nehru family is solely responsible for all these incidents: by Dr. Ramesh on 03 Jan 2009

Nehru family members are not martyrs. They were simply criminals. The killing of Indira and Rajiv were just consequences of duties they did not perform what they were supposed to do. They did not nourish the law and order system, rather created the law and order problem so that they can manipulate the people's mandate in order to remain in the power. They knowingly encouraged corruption so that they can produce vote fetching delegates, fund party and themselves from the commissions. They exactly got what they deserved. Nehru family is solely responsible for the lawlessness and existing corruption in India. Now situation has become so worse that very few dare to start a new venture in India and so we don't have jobs even for few hundred IITians, except 3rd grade leftover outsourced jobs offered by so called big Indian companies.

nehru family- a curse of india? by k.madhukar on 05 Jan 2009

Dr Ramesh is right. When India was poorest country, its leader Nehru behaved like world leader and his patronising way of dealing with China made them attack us knowing full well nehru kept our armed forces ill equipped. He always nurtured a feeling his daughter alone is fit to rule India after his departure.Indira institutionalised corruption and made the congress party a private limited company with help of any number of Mir casims and jaichands of the party and finally died a dogs death at the hands of her own body guards. His son was so immature to believe that what Americans and french could not do in Vietnam, his army could do in srilanka and he too paid the prize for his folly. Now her daughter in law rules the country without accountability and India has become a laughing stock by the way it handles terror originationg from pak soil.

Nehru Family is solely responsible for all these incidents by S.V.Madhav on 05 Jan 2009

I agree one hundred % to Dr.Ramesh's message. It is a shame on these congress party members which are supporting Nehru family offshoots to rule our country.

Nerhu's and the modern thinking by vishal on 05 Jan 2009

In India we are keen to throw responsibilities upon others.Aren't we the only one responsibile of what is our country today.Corruption starts from us only, caste system is deeply routed in our country (the only non religious party is congress). the differences came from the time of maharajas. We were an religious and extreme poverty country, and the things are chanching, so please, if you want to criticise do it for something constructive and not for the sake of blamming, and please analise hisory instead of reading it.

suicide by preet on 04 Jan 2009

hello Dr. Ramesh, I dont think you deserve that title'Dr.'... people like you who blame others for all the bad things around is a curse for India.. There are lots of people out there who are facing bad times even worser than failing to get some dream jobs. Are they all coming suicide?. Right attitude and positive response and FAITH is what will make one to survive.

No u r wrong, ramesh by Common indian on 04 Jan 2009

It is not true. deocracy is the best form of government, we indians had been lazy socially, we never exercised our power of controlling the government for nation al good, we all allowed the corruption to flousrish, because of our narrow personal interests, but not prepared for the vaues or system for the nation or society at large. that resulted in,bureaucrates having hay day, and served the corruption through their nexus to politicians, foreign governments, arms dealer as well as contractors. Politicians work the way, people want them to work. till the time perople participate in working, corruption cannot be eradicated. So make them trasparent through RTI and accountable through the legal and democrsatic means. begin it today, corruption will be oy tomorrow

Nehru family's responsibility by Subbu on 04 Jan 2009

Dear Dr. Ramesh, for the above activities all the Nehru family people got Bharat Ratna award also, which do not forget. Now two more are waiting for the award

Isolated Incident... by Seeker on 03 Jan 2009

I think we should not read too much into an isolated incident. I did my BTech in IIT ages ago. The MTech students usually have a less socially active life, and it is possible that once in a while we get some people falling into a trap of depression. It is an unfortunate event, but generalizing it to the origins of Indian politics, etc., is a bit of an over-reaction.S

Introduce Meditation by P.Kulandavelu on 03 Jan 2009

Getting admission in IITs and IIMs is a dream to every brilliant student.Naturally subjects are tough. But all the students are getting through as they are already intelligent, but most of the time they are under tension,as they are always behind the subjects and it is quite nature.University authorities can easily understand the students' mental tension and one time I heard that authorities are arranging for the councilling of such students with leading psychiatristics to get relief of their tensions.Surely that will give good result. But in this particular case when Mr Suman failed to get job from the campus interview, his disappointment should have watched by his close friends and they would have consoled him and encouraged him to try for anothr job. In general, authorities could have called the students who were not selected and advised them in the appropriate way so that they would be free from the grief totally. If Universities introduce meditation for all it will reduce tension.

Admission to IIT by sinnamma Das on 04 Jan 2009

Kulanda velu states that the admission into IIT/IIM is a dream of brilliant students. Wrong. Under the caste based quota, candidates with mediocre educational accomplishments can also get into IIT/IIM. Kulanda velu should know that !!

I think it is high time that IIT registers it's alumni with on campus jobs those who fail to get jobs. Also, these students can work for NGO's as technical support!

Time to unite by H M Seth on 04 Jan 2009

In the wake of this recession, it is a high time that the IIT alumni should come forward to extend help to their alma mater and relieving their juniors of such extreme stresses. It boasts a lot as seen in the PAN-IIT conferences, but now the real time has arrived to act for each one of them.
