New Delhi After smoking, alcohol and fast foods, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has now trained his guns on fairness creams flooding the market saying they have to provide scientific evidence of their claims.

"This needs to stop. They cannot say within one week you will be white and all this...," Ramadoss said in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The health minister said he has written a letter to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry seeking action against all such claims made by the manufacturers.

"They have to have scientific evidence," he said, adding the ministry was pursuing the matter from all quarters.

dont always blame politicians by aravind on 05 Aug 2011

Why should we always love to hate politicians? Even if they do or try to do something good to us. What is wrong in saying that fairness companies are cheating hell a lot of girls and instilling inferiority complex in our youth? Who is going to stop them saying that you gotta be fair to get girl friends, get married, get jobs, even excel in sports? It is very much part of duty of a Health minister to stop all these nonsense. All business houses fund media houses in India. So, they return the favour by casting Ramadoss's intentions in a bad way. I feel Ramadoss is a man who is trying to do some good. Even if he does that for a bit of publicity, let him do it folks. Even Gods did good things so that you will pray them.. and our religions say Gods will do good only if you pray them.

Fairness Is it fair? by R. Seshadri on 09 Mar 2009

Will Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss also take on Colas?. How dangerous the colas are is available from the New York Times article in Health/Fitness

health by SAMSON ASEERVATHAM on 08 Mar 2009

ramadhas has innovate political style and cult for his publicity and popularity. If he is so concerned he can improve the health of the people by providing nutritive foods at reasonable rates and low cost health care by reviving the traditional medical wisdom.I challenge him openly to the points I raised here.Let him revive the traditional liquors for the health of the people and ban IMFL which are injurious to peoples health

Well said Minister. by Ashfaq on 08 Mar 2009

Well said Minister. Offcourse we need minister like Ramdos ji who cares the society in a good manner. Well done and all the best

this is scratching the surface by Dr.G.Srinivasan on 06 Feb 2009

There are lots of Quacks doing damage in the rural and urban areas concentrate on them

Ramadoss by Zaidi on 05 Feb 2009

Mr Navneet, I am wondering what thought this minister is giving for the poor smokers, who are being made to take to other means of transport than the cheap Railway. Banning smoking on trains although the compartments are fully ventilated and even banning smoking on platforms which are open air places. This is pure discrimination against the smokers and an infringement on their constitutional rights. And he is a minister, next he may say the breathing is banned because the air is polluted and not fit for human consumption, as is the case in most cities in India.

Just don't smoke. by Akshay on 08 Mar 2009

Ummm, smokers aren't banned from trains. They just don't have to smoke while they are on trains, that's all.Spare me the faux outrage. If adults can't control their behaviour that clear implications for everyone around them, they probably should not be in public spaces.

Ramadoss by SPandya on 05 Feb 2009

Actually Zaidi, I have to respectfully disagree. The minister has a responsibility to public health. Banning smoking in public spaces goes a long way to provide relief to those who are non-smokers. In fact he is doing the smokers' lungs a favor. I was recently shown the lungs of a smoker and lungs of a non-smoker and believe me the smoker's lungs are an ugly sight. Can Ramadoss do more? Absolutely. But why criticize what he is doing right?

Ramadoss by Any on 05 Feb 2009

This man Ramodoss, I think the chap is a minister, has no work to do. Can he ban each

APCI by shyam kishore on 05 Feb 2009

An useful information : anybody finding an advertising in offensive or misleading or un ethical and affecting any community or religious sentiments you may contact Advertising Promotional Council Of India . They will take necessary action

Bravo Ramdoss by Navneet on 05 Feb 2009

I think this is the first time we have a health minister who does his job right. There may be difficulty in implementing certain laws for containing things with regard to Smoking /Alcohol etc. but this minister does gives his opinion right. Surprisingly when our lady Ministers like Renuka and Sheela looping down to Bazaari dialogues to promote Pub culture Here is one minister who gives his views which we all agrees but differ due to certain political rivalries. We need Proffessionals as ministers and not back door entries who become a burden for the whole country.

Unfair advertising by Jayadevan on 05 Feb 2009

The companies making the creams and their ads are not ridiculous. We are. What are we protesting about? That the creams do not whiten? As long as our culture does not change, there will always be a market for fairness products. When will we stop parading our girls like milch cattle to sell them off to the first bidder? We could also have some way of gauging their son-bearing capacity and adding that to their list of accomplishments. Remember, this is the country where a bride burner gets his second wife pregnant by the time the court case is over and his sentence pronounced. Don't remember Sudha Goel? What price our daughters? I feel killing them off before they are born is the kindest thing we can do for them.

Colour blind by Black Indian on 05 Feb 2009

Thanks Anbumani

Taller ,Stronger,Sharper by shyam kishore on 05 Feb 2009

Recently two of the major health Drink manufactures are held in an ad war .claiming that drinking thier products makes children taller . The height is a genetic factor and no matter what you eat or drink if you are predisposed by your genetical factors you are not going to grow taller . The Ad conveniently mask this factor. This also make a wrong notion that being taller is required be successful in life . We must act against these misleading advertisements

Excellent Ramdoss by Suresh v on 05 Feb 2009

This is 1000% correct.Maneka Gandhi should now support Ramdoss cross political. All the cosmotics used are causing birth defects also.

Fairness creams: Ramadoss says you can't get white by MSR Ayyangar on 05 Feb 2009

Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss may not be liked by many for interfering with and trying to influence the personal habits of Indian public - but he apperas to be sincere and honest in his approach. NO one can disagree with his reason, logic and purpose. He appears to be a politician truthful to his conscience and acts unperturbed by the possible repercussions to his popularity - a quality rare in politics. His purpose

He is the first one by Mrudula Phadnis on 05 Feb 2009

Yes, Dr. Ramdoss, I did not like your handling of some administrative issues, but I think you are the first person in the UPA gang to show courage to take on well settled vested interests. Your stand on pub culture is also courageous.

Beauty is a complex thing. Having a healthy glowing skin of any colour is important. by Ayyappa on 05 Feb 2009

Good move. This is what govt are for. To provide guidence and formulate rules. These advts are ridiculous and many people wate money on these. The bigger issue is it butress the inferiority complex on dark skinned people. The slavish mentality to white is encouraged. Dark or fair beauty is a mix of many things. I still dream of Smitha Patil (for those who do not know- her she is a dark skinned beauty of Bollywood, died as wife of raj Babber)

Sachchey mann ke Gorey Bano..... by payalsanjay on 05 Feb 2009

I totally agree with Ramadosji, he is right.....Let's face the facts that "gorapan of skin" is not all we must have, instead we must strive to make our hearts "clean n clear n saaf".

Fairness Cream by Avinash Baranwal on 05 Feb 2009

Yes, his questing is correct. In India only such companies can make such claims. They must provide a scientific proof.

Fairness creams by R Ramesh on 05 Feb 2009

Mr.Anbumani Ramadoss do the correct job. So many not proven clamis ranging from baby food, drinks, hair products , cosmetics, herbel medicine and even gym tools

Moron as minister by Meenakshi on 05 Feb 2009

The real issue is that we have a moron as minister. Obviously he cannot focus on the real issues faced by our health system. If you do not know what these are visit any government hospital or even better get yourself admitted in them.

Absolutely agree by K Sanjiv on 05 Feb 2009

Finally someone has taken action on this disgusting phenomenon. The creams harm the skin and should be banned.

Is 'white' better!!??!! by Kamalam on 05 Feb 2009

Why shouldn't one be dark complexioned???? Why this obsession to be fair???? All these advertisments should be banned from the media. If someone wants to look fair, let him/her use these creams(that's a very personal thing), but trying to influence through the media that 'white' is better is defanitely racism.

Bad Reporting by Thomas George on 05 Feb 2009

The minister targetted deliberate misinformation using advertisements. People may believe advertisements with actors dressed up as professionals. With more than 40% illiterates and a craze for fairness, the minister is right about these ads.He hardly suggested banning the creams.

this is all a farce by Dr.G.Srinivasan on 05 Feb 2009

He did not get his "Cut"?

Mr. Ramdoss by Vignesh on 05 Feb 2009

I would suggest Mr. Ramdoss to contest elections for Tamilnadu Assemby and try to form a government. He is one of the best and brightest Tamilian I have ever seen. None of the people in DMK, including the current head and his family membrs, are peanuts before Mr.Ramdoss. Every Tamilian should be proud of Mr. Ramdoss. Every point so far made by Mr. Ramdoss are scientific and with reasons.

Fairness cream is not fair by Seshadri on 05 Feb 2009

I am glad that he woke up to this false propaganda. I wish he takes up similar issues about dental creams and shampoos. Infact he should restrict/deny advertisement for these products, similar to cigarettes and drinks
