Bhopal While Madhya Pradesh government is making all efforts to make the 'Surya Namaskar' exercise on Swami Vivekanand's birthday here tomorrow, a world record, Muslim leaders have opposed the move by issuing a fatwa against it.

Leaders of the minority community have termed the move as un-Islamic and equated it with idol-worship, which is prohibited in Islam. They also issued a fatwa in this regard on Tuesday which was also ratified by the Shahar Qazi, Sayyed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi.

The school education department has made elaborate arrangements to ensure maximum participation in the Surya Namaskar exercise so that a world record can be created by registering the feat in the Guinness Book of records, official sources said.

Directives have been issued to all the government and government-aided schools to ensure maximum participation in the exercise so that it can become a world record.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has clarified that the participation in the exercise is not compulsory.

State School Education Minister, Archana Chitnis told reporters, "Surya Namaskar is a Yogic exercise aimed at improving one's health and those not interested in taking part in it have an option to stay away from it. Sun is neither saffron nor green."

However, Muslim leaders have termed the move as an attempt to saffronise the education system.

Don,t fear all the buddies we are not converting any Mslims to Hindu dont worry dear. you are not thinking But we are thinking "you are on of us" Kuran says, " ADAM KO KHUDAMAT KAHO ADAM KHUDA NAHI HAI, KHUDA KE NUR SE ADAM JUDA NAHI HAI" we are just spreading that NUR of KHUDA

Even if it is idol worship what harm it will do ? by BetterMind on 15 Jan 2012

If one does not want to make Suryanamaskar, he shall simply shut up his mouth. Nobody forcing him to practice Suryanamaskara. Why does he poke his nose unnecessarily in our believes? Do the Hindu brothers object his religious practices? Even if he thinks Suryanamaskara is idol worship, he needs not to babble incoherently. He also worships Allah five times every day.

Surya Namaskar by Albert D'souza on 13 Jan 2012

I pity my muslim counterparts in the country. Let them be away from whatever is good in Indian (not Hindu) civilisation. I have been performing this yogic exercise for one decade and have derived a lot of benefits from this.

Just an exercise ? by Muslim on 12 Jan 2012

As per Wikipedia : Surya Namaskara, known in English as Sun Salutation (lit. "salute to the sun"), is a common sequence of Hatha yoga asanas. Its origins lie in a worship of Surya, the Hindu solar deity. And Muslim believe there is none worthy of worship, except the Lord, the creator of the world and the heavens. whether you call it exercise or worship, we just can't do that....so simple :)

Mr by shirish dave on 12 Jan 2012

If a limb of a body is put in one or other position, (Surya namaskar where you have to fold your hands and have to move physically in some way or other) before a creation of God (Sun), how a God of a religion can have irritation? When the event is optional what is the need of a Fatwa? Is there any Fatwa for a Yusuf as Dilip?

Ignorant ppl by Ditt on 12 Jan 2012

Please dont play politics with anything ... by shibin on 11 Jan 2012

Surya Namaskar is something very good for mind and body . This Narrow minded approach is what which ruined our culture .Trying to politicise whatever they can ,not thinking about people , we are all human beings first ...

Surya Namaskar by Indian Citizen on 11 Jan 2012

Surya Namaskar is not a religious activity. Muslims clerics should realize that they are in pluralistic society, and they should broaden their outlook. They should stop seeing every inititative from religious angle , not interfere in overall social activities unless these are directed against Islam. Otherwise Muslims will remain socialy isolated.

Absurd objections... by Mahesh Naik on 11 Jan 2012

Unless there is a compulsion on them, why are they trying to compete with night time howling dogs..

This is an excercise as long you treat this as a health education by rajkumar on 11 Jan 2012

You call it whatever namaskar, it is established it is good for mind and body. It is part of the Indian tradition and civilization. There is affront to any religion. In fact I am christian and I love this. The problem lies with BJP government and narrow minded Muslim scholars. let the Muslim scholars answer what happens if they dont get to see the SUN for next 7 days. Once faith and love to god is in the mind and what you do and not in the physical self.

Middle Age myths by GK on 11 Jan 2012

If idol worship is prohibited in Islam why do Muslims look for directions towards 'kibla' in Mecca and offer their prayers? There are sects in Islam which worship graveyards and why do Shahar Qazi, Sayyed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi etc desist from issuing a fatwa to those sects?

Surya namaskar by bharat on 11 Jan 2012

Foolish to raise this issue and see some hidden agenda. anything Indian is a eye sore for pseodo secular media and persons.

Surya Namaskar by Mahesh Gokhale on 11 Jan 2012

It is an exercise for the whole body, very similiar in sense to Namaz. Why do muslim clerics always want to paint every part of life with religious colors. Lets have a record attempt at record Namaz this Id. Rightly, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar asked the state to limit the jurisdiction of religion to that part of life, namely the private religious practices of life. But sadly, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar had to restrict the "Uniform Code Bill", to the "Hindu Code Bill", under political pressure from the Congress of those times. This was the start of the lame, vaciliating policy of the Congress, which has utterly failed to bring any prosperity to our Muslim brethen.

what about Vajrasana? by sri on 11 Jan 2012

I think the muslim leaders are unaware about Vajrasana posture which is almost similar to the style how the muslims sit and offer their prayers...So its not good for muslim leaders to paint the society...
