Kolkata, April 8 Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s plan to provide a facelift to the New Market has been put on hold because KMC fears the similar repercussions, it is now facing at the Park Circus market complex.

“We do not want to make a Park Circus market out of New Market. We have not been able to shift traders of Park Circus market to let Reliance carry out developmental work. The same can happen with New Market,” said a civic body official.

KMC handed over the Park Circus market to Reliance Industries more than an year ago.

But no developmental work has started in the dilapidated market complex till date.

The traders association of Park Circus market moved the court three months ago against KMC.

The traders have refused to shift their base in Park Circus maidan — the temporary rehabilitation area that was chosen by KMC for the Park Circus market traders.

“Reliance has been asked to develop a rehabilitation package for the traders in Park Circus maidan,” said Joint Municipal commissioner (Development) KMC, Sahidul Islam.

“It is a difficult job to relocate the traders to the Park Circus maidan area,” said Islam.

The engineering department of the civic body had decided to renovate the New Market complex through BOT(Build Operate and Transfer) system and to float a tender to the effect in the first week of April. But the stalemate in Park Circus market has discouraged private players from participating in developing the New Market, forcing the civic body to cancel the floating of tender.

New Market was constructed in 1871 and received a heritage tag in the late twentieth century. Out of the 23 municipal markets in the city, it provides KMC with maximum revenue.
