Kolkata, May 5 Guardians of some of the students of Jewish Girls’ School brought traffic on Park Street to a standstill, after they arrived at the school premises this morning but found the gates closed.

The school authorities had proposed a fee hike from the current academic session, which was being opposed by the guardians. Subsequently, the school administration pasted a notice on the gates saying that classes will be suspended for an indefinite period.

On finding the gates closed, the guardians who had come to drop their children in the morning, became furious and started protesting.

The school, which is run by the Jewish community, is situated on Park Street.

The agitating protests paralysed the traffic on the Park Street in the morning, forcing the police to intervene.

The guardians said that the students had a physics examination scheduled on Monday and the administration did not pay any heed to it. Sk Alauddin, Secretary of the Guardians Association of the school, said that if the school management does not rethink on the fee hike, there would be more such protests. “The annual session fee of the school has been increased from Rs 2,400 to 4,000. The monthly tuition fee has been increased from Rs 630 to Rs 750.

The laboratory charges for science students has been increased from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000,” said Alauddin.

While school principal S Chaudhury denied to comment on the matter, a few teachers said that the hike was not exorbitant and the protests were continuing despite some relaxation.
