The college had recently announced a hike in the fees of engineering courses. The fees per year were increased from Rs 26,500 to Rs 37,500. The college had also asked the third year students to pay the fees along with the difference for last two years. Following this, many students gathered at the college premises on Thursday morning to protest the fee hike.
Soon, few political activists from Shiv Sena and Mahararashtra Navnirman Sena reached the college for supporting the agitation.
College authorities said that the hike was as per the government instructions. But the students continued to agitate. Following their agitation, the authorities assured to take a decision in this case by Friday.
On Friday morning, college principal S D Regge maintained that fee hike was not done by college but by the government. College authorities however gave a concession that students would not be asked to pay the hike amount for the first six months.
But the students wanted the college to give a written assurance of cancellation of fee hike. Angry students, who were supported by the political activists, started raising slogans.
Police was called at the spot for controlling the situation. Huge police staff from the Wanavdi division was deployed at the college. Assistant Commissioner of Police Ramesh Biwal repeatedly appealed the students to calm down. But the students refused to stop their agitation. With no options left, the police had to go for lathi-charge. Some of the students then started stone pelting. Sub inspector Kshirsagar, attached to the Kondhwa police station received a major injury on his leg. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
