For actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty reprising the role of Feluda in Sandip Ray’s new film, Kailashey Kelenkari, which is expected to release in December, comes with a tinge of pride. “I idolise Soumitra Chatterjee and filling up his shoes is a huge challenge and a humbling experience. Once I heard that Sandip Ray was thinking of reviving the Feluda series on the big screen, I insisted to him that I be taken in for the role. For me, it was a dream to play a character made memorable by Chatterjee,” states Chakraborty.

The original onscreen Feluda, Soumitra Chatterjee, returns the compliment.” People ask me if I’m happy with the new Feluda films. All I can say that those who were bowled over by Sandip Ray’s jazzed-up Feluda in Bombaiyer Bombete, will love Kailashey Kelenkari. Sabyasachi is my favourite actor of this generation and he makes for a dashing yet serious Feluda,”claims the veteran. “I remember Sabyasachi as a young struggling actor who used to frequent my house. He has certainly come a long way,” Chatterjee adds.

After the commercial success of Bombaiyer Bombete, Sandip Ray returns with the same team, comprising Chakraborty as Feluda,Parambrata Chatterjee as Topshe and Bibhu Bhattacharya as Jatayu. Biplab Chatterjee, will join the trio in an “interesting role”. “Though initially it may seem like I play a negative character in the film, the audience will be in for a big surprise,” promises Biplab Chatterjee.

“Kailashey Kelenkari is a personal favourite story and the film gave me the chance to explore the fabulous location of Ellora,”states Ray. The story, however, was not the first choice for the director.“We had shot some portions of Tintorettor Jishu, but it got delayed due to unforeseen circumstances,” says Ray. His father, Satyajit Ray’s super sleuth will match wits with a gang of smugglers in the backdrop of the ancient Ellora caves this time, and the entire team seem to fully comprehend the kind of expectations Feluda fans have from this film after the success of Bombaiyer Bombete. “Though we are not complacent, we all know that this film will live up to everybody’s expectation,” sums up Chakraborty.
