Jammu, March 1: Beset with male child syndrome in the socio-economic setup in Jammu and Kashmir, one girl child out of seven female babies is eliminated in Jammu district of the state portraying a worsening child-sex ratio.

"One girl out of 7 newly born girls becomes a victim portraying a very bleak picture in Jammu and Kathua districts of J-K," Dr Sabu George said during a two-day media workshop on child sex ratio and female foeticide at the medical college.

Dr George, an expert who has done extensive study of the issue says a very unfortunate situation was developing in the Jammu region. It will soon surpass Punjab as per the trends.

Quoting the survey done on the data collected from twin districts in 2006-07, he said that as a result of girl killings, the child sex ratio in Jammu is 828 girls to 1,000 boys and in Kathua district it is 796 girls for 1000 boys.

If the present trends continues, Kathua, which borders Punjab, is visibly heading for a demographic catastrophe in a decade or so, he said.

Dr George, who has already toured various districts across the country advocating the cause of girl child and ensuring a total ban on the sex determinations tests said, "It is time for administration and society to wake up and arrest this serious trend."

Female Foeticide by Vejain on 01 Mar 2008

A time will come when there will not be sufficient females of marriageable age for more than 20% of the males in these places. Female foeticide is an abhorrent practice and an outrage. I can foresee parents of prospective males paying for their sins by giving ‘dowries’ to the parents of the brides-to-be. The main reasons why this practice still prevails are:1)Insecurity of parents (for someone to look after them) in their old age.2)Poverty and consequently the fear of not being able to pay dowries to get daughters married off.3)Ignorance or delusion or disregard of the fact that a foetus is a live human being albeit unborn. The last one is usually the result of deliberate deception by vested interests e.g. those who make a lot of money using ultra-sound machines to determine the gender of the unborn child and those ‘doctors’ (butchers?) who actually ‘terminate pregnancies’ (kill an unborn child) for non-medical reasons. It does not help that the very feminists (usually the do-gooders from the West who vehemently criticise the social evil of dowry) are the ones who support the ‘right’ of the woman to abort because she can do whatever she likes with her body!! So the unborn child has no body of her own until it pops out of the mother?
