Kolkata/Berhampore, July 18: Two Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel were killed and a BSF man was injured in an exchange of fire between border guards of the two countries in West Bengal's Murshidabad district early on Thursday.

District Magistrate Subir Bhadra said the BDR opened fire when cattle were being smuggled to Bangladesh near Nimtita area of the district.

The BSF retaliated after an Indian border guard was injured in the BDR firing, Bhadra said.

BSF sources said constable R K Pande received gunshot injuries in the leg and lost four fingers while he, along with 28 members of his battalion, were chasing the rustlers who were taking away cattle to Bangladesh in a boat.

The BSF seized 258 cattlehead, the sources said. A flag meeting was held in Murshidabad where the BSF lodged a formal complaint with the BDR, the sources said.
