Kolkata, April 02 Fire broke out in two commercial buildings in central Kolkata late in Tuesday night destroying property worth lakhs were damage. a person was seriously injured in the incident.

Over a dozen fire tenders were called in to bring the blaze under control. They took five hours to douse the flames.

The fire started from the commercial building at 30, Lenin Sarani and spread to the adjacent building at 31 A, Lenin Sarani.

Tara Begum, a resident of 31 A, suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to CMCH.

The fire tenders rescued the other residents of the building. Some of them fell sick after inhaling the smoke and were also admitted to CMCH.

The multistoried commercial houses contained several shops with combustible products like LPG cylinders, polythene and leather shops. The ground floor of one of the buildings contained adhesive and paints.

Though the exact cause of the fire is still to be ascertained, the Fire and Emergency Department is not ruling out leakage of gas from cylinders as one of the reasons. A team of KMC officials visited the spot this morning. “ There is no need to pull down the building immediately as the structure is quite stable,” clarified Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
