Mumbai, August 5: The Esplanade Court in Mumbai for the first time has convicted a woman driver in a drunken driving case.

The woman, an executive, was driving a Mercedes on Aug 1 when the traffic police flagged her down in south Mumbai.

The court on Monday sentenced her to a day's simple imprisonment.

According to reports, she spent the day in Azad Maidan police lock-up and was later released in the evening.

The city has registered about 8,065 cases of drunken driving in the last one year. But this was the first time that a woman driver was convicted.
