Hospital authorities said that 10 new born infants were placed in the unit for treatment of jaundice. "It seems that an electric short circuit was the reason behind the incident that left 5 infants dead and five others critically injured", they said.
DSP Manjit Brar who reached the spot told The Indian Express that out of the dead, three children were only five days old while the other two were ten days old. "We have shifted one critically injured baby to Chandigarh while others are being taken care in the other wards of the hospital", he said.
According to eye witnesses, the fire broke out in the wee hours of Saturday and within minutes left the entire incubator and phototherapy unit into ashes. "The fire broke out at around 3 am when very few people were around. Relatives of some other patients carried out the rescue operation", they told The Indian Express.
"I saw huge flames erupting from the department and I took my blanket and carried three children in the first go. Another attendant of a patient also helped me", said Surjit Singh from village Nehru Khurd. "We took two more children out but could not save the other five as by then the flames had charred them", he added.
Meanwhile heart rending scenes were witnessed at the hospital as the doctors failed to inform or console anxious relatives of the victims in any way.
The Punjab chief minister declared an ex-gratia grant of Rs 1 lakh each for the deceased's families while the DC Patiala has ordered an inquiry. The police have registered a case under section 174 of the CrPc.

the truth is that the phototherapy unit was made of woooden structure and was a stop gap arrangment. it fell on the children and that started a short circuit and fire ,rather than the other way around. i really cant understand why media highlight that hospitals dont have a MANTAINENCE department.
It is very painful to read how 5 infants are burnt alive in a hopital incubator. It is also very shameful to know that there were no staff aroud to find the smoke/fire in its initial stage. Were they all asleep or plainly negligent? Monetary help to the parents will not restore their new born babies to life. In any accident, it is the person incharge is solely responsible especially in the death of innocent babies. Such fire accident in a neonatal ward killing babies in an incubator by fire is almost impossible in countries like Canada where precious human life is protected very carefully.
Till such times as we have national fire safety standards which are enforced strictly, this kind of incidents will keep happening.
This is unpardonable. No punishment can justify this heinous act of negligence.
What is going on ....Why is this happening...Why so corruption, irresponsibility and negligance...People say India is shinning...this show India is charring...can't speak on it ...so touching and hurt by this...
