Flip-flop: US now wants terrorists punished in Pak

Islamabad The US administration is asking Pakistan to ensure that those responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks are punished inside the country instead of being extradited to India, according to a media report.

The Bush administration has informed the Pakistan government that it would like it to initiate "prosecution with sufficient efforts to ensure conviction" of those behind the Mumbai incident, the 'Dawn' newspaper quoted US sources as saying.

The move is a "clear change" in the attitude of the US, which earlier had backed the Indian demand that some of the suspects be extradited to India.

The change apparently has been noticed in New Delhi, where External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday that the US pressure on Pakistan to act against the Mumbai perpetrators had "not produced tangible returns", the newspaper said.

US officials had earlier supported India's demand for the handing over of those behind the attacks but the change in their attitude followed a realisation in Washington that it would not be easy for the Pakistan government to extradite key Lashker-e-Taiba leaders to India, the sources said.

In their negotiations with US officials on this issue, the Pakistanis insisted that the extradition of Pakistani citizens to India particularly when the two countries did not have an extradition treaty would have unpredictable consequences for the government, the sources said.

"The Pakistanis argued that the resulting political instability would not only weaken the government but could also harm the war against the Taliban and Al Qaida militants in Afghanistan as Pakistan played a key supporting role in this war," the report said.

US FLIP-FLOP by N.V.SANKARAN on 05 Jan 2009

Yesterday, there was a report saying that our Home Minister has rushed to the US to show them the evidence India had collected against Pakistan. Is our country so week as to be at the US mercy to act? Why do we want to shoot from the US shoulders? Can we not hold our guns ourselves?

Flip-flop: US now wants terrorists punished in Pak by suresh rao on 04 Jan 2009

If this is true then India must immediately stop wasting its time asking USA to influence Paki Trecehrous Heathen to hand over the Terrorists holed up in PTH country but send in Indian Intellegence Agents and SpecialForces intoPakistan and liquidate the terrorists . If you don't know how I am sure that Isreal will be glad to help India .We only need to ask them.

US stance by J.M.Manchanda on 03 Jan 2009

The double standards of US are curious. This is the same country, which forced Pakistan to hand over suspects to it and even set up a camp to detain terror suspects outside the jurisdiction of US Federal court. India should understand that US, despite all the talk about building a strategic relationship with India will only further its won interest first. Indians now expect its govt. to go beyond words nd take concrete actions to at least safeguard its internal security.

Decisions-Hard to come by milcbin on 03 Jan 2009

Why are we even asking the U.S to do something for us (that Pak extradiate the terroristss) why can't we take a decision for ourselves. Is it because there are lot of us Indians in the muslim countries (Gulf) or is it because of gutless, spineless politicians

Flip-flop: US now wants terrorists punished in Pak by suresh rao on 02 Jan 2009

What a farce. It just goes to prove that we cannot depend on anyone in our fight against terror. Prepare fora long haul in fighting terrorism and carry it out with single minded dedication undeterred by world opinion.

US FLIP FLOP by Piyush Gandhi on 02 Jan 2009

If at all we want to put any pressure on Pakistan, it should be CHINA who needs to be persuaded and not USA. As observed by others, I don't know where our Foreign policy experts are getting directions from but a smart and shrewed politician will make use of the good offices of LEFT who are nothing but stooge of CHINA. This way we can serve two purpose in one. Make the LEFT party realize how reliable CHINA is for INDIA's independent foreign policy and also a test for us to find out how far CHINA can go to help us with Pakistan. Also we should not hesitate in making CHINA a big daddy if we can achieve a lasting piece in the region and if that satisfies CHINA's EGO of becoming the Big Daddy. If we have peace in the region then that stability can provide us chance to grow economically and that economic clout will make CHINA to realize and have good relations with us.So all I would say is don't be dependent on US make CHINA the big daddy now and remove the thorn in our neck i.e. PAKISTAN

USA-India relations by Jane A on 02 Jan 2009

Please don't judge all US people by the Bush administration. George W. Bush has been acting without the support of the American people for many years, as evidenced by the fact that he has the lowest public support ratings of any US President ever. I am looking forward to the Obama Presidency acting more responsibly toward the rest of the world.

US or India by Pavan Sharma on 02 Jan 2009

We are led to believe that India is a Sovereign, Socialist, Republic country, that can decide on its own. But I doubt with the buch of filthy, jokers ruling India. If Indian Govt feels US is governing India then US is to be blamed for the recent flip-flop. But, if Indian govt is REALLY governing India, then Indian govt needs to take the blame for its in-action on the attack on the Sovereignty of India!JAI HIND!

US now wants terrorists punished in P by bipin Shah on 02 Jan 2009

I think it is a good idea. In India the cases would drag on for years. Let Pakistan try them and India pressure the International community to ensure that it is not a whitewash.

FlipFlop.. by Chandresh on 02 Jan 2009

I just don't get it. Why are we so knee deep in diplomacy with the US

pakisthan by prem kumar on 02 Jan 2009

It is not a surprise at all. The pakisthan govenment will give them pakisthan rathna. Like other countries india should defend itself. Israel, russia even srilanka did this. We have a spineless governement. They put the soft mukherjee in front because nobdoy will criticise. It is very unfortunate and a disgrace .Till India get rids of its idiot politicians, until learned people contest from offices, there is a systm which will get goon politicians into prison we will continue this state. Dont blame other countries.

ACTIONS BY INDIA by Rana on 02 Jan 2009

Now that we have lost the initiative in doing some thing drastic, let's do it the other way. Pakistan has outsmarted us by telling the US that in case they move the troops to the Indian border, they would have no one to fight the war for them in the NWFP. Why not, we present the same secnario to the US - until and unless, Pak hands over the culprits to us, we will not move our troops from the IB and we will activate our forward air bases. After all, why should we bother if Pak is unable to fight the war in NWFP for USA or not. Next, we have to remove the MFN - Most Favoured Nation treatment being given to Pakistan. We also need to take it to the UN to have Pakistan be declared a terrorist state. If it upsets USA, "SO BE IT". Like Iran's Revolutionary Guard has been declared a terror supporting organisation, let us also have pakistan's ISI be declared a terrorist organisation. Also, put restrictions on organisations dealing with pakstan to do business in India.

US has different sets of rule for themselves

Flip-flop: US now wants terrorists punished in Pak by P T Suresh on 02 Jan 2009

Should Indians be surprised? Not at all. When India does not know what it stands for, these type of postures are to be expected from others.

American treachery by Ram on 02 Jan 2009

It was but expected that Americans would fool the UPA .After all their subject "SG" is in the UPA.Lets forget this government and its ability to bring justice for all those killed in Mumbai. The people of the country should elect a new government in April ,who would give oath that they would get revenge on the Pakis.

ssds by sd on 02 Jan 2009

This is expected and is not a surprise that US is unpredictable and its pressure on Pak will not yield any tangible results. Our government was fooling around asking US to make Pak yield. Why should it go to anyone to to justice to the country. It has unnecessarily wasted lot of precious time and finally the people who died in the blasts, no justice will be done by the government to them. Several time the people of this country have urged the government to react immediately and strike Pak after the mumbai attack but the government failed. This government doesn't have people with guts to bring the perpetrators of mubai attack to justice or strike Pak. It will talk rehtorically till elections are over then it will leave this subject and keep quite enjoying its victory of winning elections again. But definitely there will be more terror strikes , more intense because now the terrorists in the other country understand that whatever they do in India, Indians are incapable of taking action.

Flip-flop: US now wants terrorists punished in Pak by m. prasad on 02 Jan 2009

Americans are doing the right thing. If Pakistan hands over these terrorists, we will have to find excuses for not prosecuting and punishing them.

Like convicted Afzal Guru by kumar on 02 Jan 2009

Like convicted Afzal Guru who is now languishing in jail with biriyani

RamRajya by Raj on 03 Jan 2009

Folks, is it not better that they will be punished in Pak. if Advani becomes PM, he might otherwise set them free in Kandahar with money bags of tax payers.

The bangles by Sridhar on 02 Jan 2009

Mr.Thekarey had said that the present rulers should wear bangles. Yes the PM in bangles i.e. the late Indira Gandhi was the best and the bold PM we all had. She did not care for the likes of Nixon of USA and Wilson of UK. She went ahead and attacked Pakistan. Long live her memory

Foolish Sardar by Umang on 02 Jan 2009

I thought Sardars are brave, We have a Sardar PM. Either take revenge or borrow some bangles from Sonia

'Forked tongue' by Sridhar on 02 Jan 2009

What else do you expect from this 'traitor super power'. The white man speaketh with a forked tongue has been proved correct once again. USA or for any western country that matters does not have any ethics, morals or standards. They all have one thing in common and i.e. one's own interest. India should show two fingers to them and do what it exactly wants to guards it's citizens and their interests.

USA is protecting its citizens well by raj on 03 Jan 2009

Please do not blame USA. Rather admire USA that it is taking care of its people. Look at our leaders. The job of providing us security is for the man we elected to lead us and not USA.

double standards by praful pandya on 02 Jan 2009

Then why US demanded and extradited culprits of 9/11 from pak to US? Another Double standard of US!!!

US - Short term nation by Raghu on 02 Jan 2009

What a double standard.. If Osama blows up WTC, US will go after him wherever he is. But if it is Indian lives, they come cheap. So if it is OK if Pak shows a sham trial. The crazies will be back at work within few months. US needs to start living long term

U.S.FLIP FLOP by Chander Lal on 02 Jan 2009

THERE IS NOTHING NEW IN THE GAME PLAYED BY U.S. THAT IS BECAUSE AFTER DEMISE OF INDIRA GANDHI WE DO NOT HAVE A POWERFUL PERSONALITY OF THAT LEVEL. HAD SHE BEEN ALIVE, WILL U.S. HAVE GUTS TO SPEAK LIKE THIS..?MOREOVER MADAME GANDHI WAS A GEM OF A POLITICIAN TO HANDLE INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS AND THE EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTRY WAS ALWAYS HEADED BY LA'CREME OFPERSONALITIES DURING HER REGIME; NOT TO THE LEVEL OF NATWAR SINGH,PRANAB MUKEHRJI OR JASWANT SINGH.

Flip-Flop:US by Gopalakrisna on 02 Jan 2009

We should beleive and put into action the age-old wisdom "Do not depend on others".

THROW AWAY THESE SPINELESS AND SHAMELESS RULERS ! by HEMU on 02 Jan 2009

We Indians are destined to die a cowardly death. U.S ,Israel , China, Russia never beg. Because they have the guts, and they care for their citizens. Now the time has for the Indian Military to take the reins of power in Newdelhi and save the hapless citizens of India !

US U - turn by Avinash Baranwal on 02 Jan 2009

No surprise.US will never harm it's interest. And attack on india is not undermining it's interest. But then beggers are hardly the choosers. So India will never choose anything this worth setting a good example. We would still beg to US/China etc to ask pakistanis handing over our culprits. What a shame!!!
