India Floods

Bangalore/Hyderabad With a slight let up in rain, North Karnataka tonight got some respite from floods but the situation was very grim in Krishna and Guntur districts in Andhra Pradesh, as the death toll in the havoc in the two states rose to 205.

Karnataka accounted for all the 12 fresh deaths accounting for 168 fatalities due to the floods after torrential rains while a total of 37 persons perished in surging waters in neighbouring AP, officials in the two states said.

After wreaking havoc, rains showed signs of let up in Karnataka even as Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa appealed to the Centre to declare the worst flooding in the state as a a national disaster. He sought Rs 10,000 crore assistance for relief measures and rebuilding the 15 rain-ravaged districts.

"There is relief in Kurnool and Mahboobnagar districts but the situation is still grim in Krishna and Guntur districts where many villages face inundation," Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah said, adding several villages faced the threat of indundation. The floods in the state were described as the worst in 10,000 years.

The water-level receded in the famous temple town of Mantralayam in AP's Kurnool district ravaged by the floods in the river Tungabhadra -- a tributary of Krishna river.

Relief measures were on a war footing and relief camps set up as IAF helicopters and Dornier aircraft dropped food and drinking water packages.

Thousands of people were evacuated to safe places while Vijaywada district was on high alert.

According to officials, over 300,000 persons were displaced in Karnataka while another 450,000 met the same fate in AP.

The Centre rushed more than 250 specially trained NDRF personnel along with additional 80 inflatable boats to Karnataka and AP. Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister P Chidambaram will make an aerial survey of the flood affected areas tomorrow.

floods in the states by seshachalam gopalakrishnan on 07 Oct 2009

Sirs, Disaster, fury, destruction.displacement, calamity are the words used by the writers and readers about the recent rains and consequent floods in Karnataka and Andhra. These words are not attributed to any terrorist acts or train accidents but to rains. We Indians especially the farmers look to skies for their daily livelihood and the innoscent villgers even today perform pujas to rain gods for blessing them. They feel rains are blessings, benovelent, merciful and worshipful. The majority who are non believers in the powers of divine go about preaching secularism and talking against firm religious beliefs in the name of rationalism. The result is the failure of culture and agriculture. What is required now is the harmonious blending of the sacred and the secular, the temple and the tractor, the puja and the ploughing. Flood in Andrapredesh and Karnataka by KathirGaman on 06 Oct 2009

Why can't the central gouvernment propose to construct canals to divert all these stagnant wanters to other states. Like in China, the flood water in the big rivers can be diverted by constructing canals to reduce the power of flood and can be useful for other states where there is no rain for years and years.Without having any backward policy big and small states should share the heavy rainfalls for the irrigation instead of diverting to sea. Indian needs better education to undcerstand the power of nature and usefulness of raining water for the people.

only solution for flood and drought by alok on 04 Oct 2009

if you will not pay right price for water than such calamities like dought and floog will go hand in hand.we gwalarite pay only rs 1 for 1000 litre of water and same is the case with delhietes.farmers are paying nothing for water and getting free electricity too to over expoit it.In this situation nothing will be available with govt to finance water projects and we the people will do nothing to harvest rain water. If govt charges only one paise for one litre of pure water used for domestic purposes and small buiseness which it supplies rs.100000 crore can be collected annualy and mega projects like trnsferring water from flood prone to drought prone areas d india can become richest nation in no time

Put a stop to DAMS by chanakya on 04 Oct 2009

It is high time to have a national policy on the number of dams across the natural flow of the rivers. Every time when there are rains these man made dams are causing havoc in low lying areas due to back waters. These bottle necks are no less than atom bombs. Each dam is capable of drowing lakhs of people. Due to short sightedness of political leaders sevral mini mega dams have sprung all over the country. During monsoon these structures are threatining the life of the population all along. The present misery of the states is only because of senseless construction of dams and land grabbing in towns and cities.Given the psyche of the Indians, it is difficult to imagine that there would be any smooth and easy solutions to this calamity. We pray God for rains and again we pray him to stop them. Other than that I don't think we will learn from past mistakes.

India is world No.1 country who deliberate avoid safety regulations. by freddie (Indian) on 04 Oct 2009

India is like bollywood movies the police comes after the robbery as taken place. India is the worst country in the world when it comes to safety of ordinary people. Minister if you so shameless can you answer this ? I'm a citizen of India there is safety laps in kerala boat tragedy and now there is no safety for people who are trapped in floods.

Natures Justice or rather Injustice by Prinit on 04 Oct 2009

Generally it rains heavily in the western ghats with the Koyna dam overflowing around this time of the year. The excess water is released in the Krishna, however the Karnataka govt refuses to release water from Almatty causing floods in Karad and Sangli districts in Maharashtra. Every year many are displaced and die. This time nature has decided to pour downstream thereby causing the Krishna to flood below the Almatty. I am not a pessimist nor against people, however would like to highlight this fact. What goes around comes around!

Krishna river and dams by kathirgaman on 06 Oct 2009

Mr.Prinit.Thank you for your article. I too agree with your points. However, the Central gouvernment is powerless to let all these small states like Karnataka and Andrapredesh to let all these flood lavishly into sea. Krishna river could have been diverted to many other neighbouring states where people are waiting for rain and their lands need so much. As we are all Indians, all these states should share the nature with other states. Every year there is a dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on water problem. But still the central gouvernment is scared to interfer and demand once for all Karnataka to share the water with TN instead of diverting to sea. If karnataka receive electrictiy from TN why can' the open up the dame water to TN????

tamil charges for electricty by mahesh shetty on 07 Oct 2009

Tamilnadu charges karnataka for electricty we dont charge tamilnadu money for water. Otherwise we can build more dams in karnataka and produce electricity making the farm lands doe in tmailnadu.. and enjoy.. appriciate the genorocity of kannadigas. we dont get the samw water in Krishna from maharashtra The anser is NO....
