Mumbai, August 9 A day after 41 employees from telecommunication major Syntel were admitted to a hospital due to suspected food poisoning, police and the employees say the pasta served for the first time in the cafetaria on Friday may have caused the illness. The police have not filed any complaint in the matter and are awaiting the reports of the food samples sent for chemical analysis.

Forty-one employees of the US-based company’s business process outsourcing unit were rushed to L H Hiranandani Hospital after they complained of fever and nausea. A few had even fainted.

“On the previous night, many of us tried pasta, the new item on the menu, which tasted a little different. Those who had regular meals were fine. We did not eat anything after the dinner,” said Pankaj Kumar, one of the employees who was admitted to the hospital.

“We have recorded patients’ statements. All had consumed pasta at the company cafeteria. We are yet to find out whether the ready-to-use pasta packets that were used were beyond their expiry date,” said Police Sub Inspector Sitaram Panindre of the Powai police station.

When contacted, the company spokesperson said, “We are looking into the matter. As of now our focus is on the safety of our employees. Our administration is trying to establish the facts,” said Manjula Verma, global head (marketing and communication) for the BPO unit.

Of the 41 admitted, 12 are under observation and the rest have been discharged. “We have not taken gastric content of these patients since they had food the previous night. Also, they are responding to the medication,” said Dr Akash Rajpal, medical superintendent of Hiranandani hospital.
