"Recent tragic events in Orissa, Karnataka and Assam have pained all right thinking persons. There are clashes between Hindus, Christians, Muslims and Tribal groups. An atmosphere of hatred and violence is being artificially generated.
"There are forces deliberately encouraging such tendencies and also spawning militant outfits who engage in irrational violence. These need to be firmly dealt with. There is, at the same time, real need for better understanding of the forces at work," he said in his opening remarks at the National Integration Council meeting.
On terrorism, which was included at the last minute in the agenda of the meeting after BJP Chief Ministers made a demand, he said that there can be no compromise with terrorism and terrorists have to be dealt with firmly.
"At the same time, it is important that in trying to counter terrorism, wrong methods and means are not adopted. Any impression that any community or sections amongst them are being targeted or that some kind of profiling is being attempted should be avoided. This vital, as otherwise, it could lead a major polarization in society," Singh said.
Among those in the audience were Cabinet Ministers, Chief Ministers, leaders of national and state parties including Sonia Gandhi, Rajnath Singh and eminent personalities from various walks of life.
Chief Ministers of Orissa and Karnataka Naveen Patnaik and B S Yeddyurappa and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi were among those present at the day long meeting.
The Prime Minister appeared to be doing a balancing act by referring to the recent ethnic violence in Assam along with the attack on Christians in the NDA-ruled Karnataka and Orissa but made it clear that "the process of governance needs to be strengthened and the rule of law maintained, but in a manner that brings hope and succour to the poor and needy".
Against demands from UPA for imposition of President's rule in Orissa and a ban on Hindu outfit Bajrang Dal and VHP, Singh said those who threaten communal harmony, integrity and peaceful coexistence deserved very deterrent punishment.
"In doing so, we need to be bound by the framework of our Constitution and the political democratic process that enables us to reconcile differences through dialogue. We should not be provoked to suspend or subvert a democratic process in the search for solutions," he said.

nice to hear. don't forget however that the root cause of the violence is the planned and managed conversions by one group at the expense of another. not only does it it humiliate one group but also changes the demographics to its detriment. if you look for the main force causing violence, you had better not close your eyes to this one. if their way of life is threatened thus, they will respond and the response wont always be trtty.

Just as a confidence-building move, shouldn’t the Prime Minister have also warned the Church authorities in India to cool down on conversion? In the middle of the unrest, it does not serve a cause by serving injunctions only on one of the warring parties. (Concluded)

The Prime Minister’s theatricals are for the benefit of Congress workers who must be kick-started for the Loka Sabha elections which are looming on the horizon. Yes he is absolutely correct. With the elections close around the corner, the BJP is engineering hatred by directing its sister organizations to commit mass crimes against minorities in a bid to amass majority hindu vote. They know with the success of the Manmohan Singh government in the nuclear deal, the BJP is in panic mode! So they resort to the best thing they know, spreading of hatred, violence and dividing this nation along religious lines. But hindu religion does not stand for hatred, violence, rape and division. Its a religion that has taught the world about, peace, tolerance, harmony and co-existence. I am a hindu and its time for all hindus to not only disown the organizations of VHP, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and RSS. But strongly condemn their activities and lobby strong for their ban. Once these are banned, the christian missionaries can do their work of conversions peacefully and without hindrance. They can publish more books about the idiotic Hindu deities and Hindu rituals. Dear mr.PadmanabhaAre you aware that the RSS/VHP etc receive larger funds than Xtian organisations from the west.Ironically these funds come from Hindus who are able to live peacefully among Xtian majority communities. It is regrettable that thse funds are used by Hindu groups to terrorise minorities in india .Remember what goes around ,comes around .Someday the present day actions would be the justifcation for attacks on Hindus outside India.

I think Romesh is useless hindu monk. first of all you guys do not know how to treat your own hindus. you think tribes are achooth! obviously they will try to take good religion where they are equally treated. First allow one achooth to any thirupathi mala temple as a priest. you can do! so better all low caste will convert one day to christians or muslims.
