Forget queues, send mail faster from model PO

Pune, August 24 Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar’s hometown, Baramati, will have a post office that will be a model for the rest of the country. Part of the pilot project launched by the ministry of communications, the post office will change the way we look at postal services.

It includes a electronic token system, separate counters for senior citizens and a kiosk housing information on the latest announcements. The revamped post office will be inaugurated on Monday by postmaster general (Pune) S C Jarodia.

Union communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had launched the project to upgrade and modernize 500 post offices in 10 selected postal circles in two phases. In the first phase, 50 post offices were identified for their physical appearance and for their work environment.

Jarodia, who will inaugurate the post office, said, “In the state circle five post offices have been identified for the first phase. Besides Baramati in Pune region, the others are Nanded, Bhandara, Calangute and Jawahar.”

The changes include looks, both in the interior and the exterior of the building, installation of the latest technology, soft skill training to staff, a separate counter for mails, financial services, introduction of the token system and a computerised savings pass books.

Jarodia said that at the end of the day the customer should feel the difference in quality of service being rendered. A post forum comprising residents of Baramati have been given the task to constantly interact with the public as well as post office officials and suggest ways and means to improve the quality of services further. Besides Baramati, the project will extend to 8 more post offices in the second phase. It will go to Mahabaleshwar post office, Shivajinagar, Pune city head office, Rajgurunagar, Panchgani, Shrirampur head office, Karad office and Ahmednagar head office, he said.
