Buenos Aires A 38-year-old former Miss Argentina has died from complications after undergoing cosmetic surgery on her buttocks. Solange Magnano, mother of seven-year-old twins who won the crown in 1994, died of a pulmonary embolism on Sunday after being in critical condition for three days following a gluteoplasty in Buenos Aires.

Close friend Roberto Piazza said the procedure involved injections and the liquid “went to her lungs and brain.”“A woman who had everything lost her life to have a slightly firmer behind,” he said. The surgery is quite common and many women undergo the procedure to improve the contours of the buttocks.

Magnano’s burial Monday was shown on Argentine television. Magnano died in a hospital after being transferred from a clinic where she underwent the surgery on Wednesday, Telam news agency said. Dr. Gonzalo Cortes y Tristan said she arrived at his hospital with an acute respiratory deficiency. Her condition kept deteriorating until the embolism.

Magnano ran her own modelling agency in Argentina. Thousands of grieving fans left comments on her Facebook page. More than 830 people had become members of her tribute page on the site. Magnano’s most recent project was a runway show to be held in December.

Over the past few years, Argentina has become a destination for plastic surgery because the costs of such procedures here are significantly lower than in other parts of the world.

Plastic surgeons in the country have developed a reputation of being the best in their field— an outcome of their vast experience. Figures suggest that 1 in every 30 Argentines has gone under the knife. Medical tourism is projected to be a $100 billion global industry here by 2010
