Gangtok, October 25: Congress leader and former Sikkim Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari and IAS officer P K Pradhan were on Saturday sentenced to six months imprisonment by a CBI designated court in Gangtok after finding them guilty in a corruption case registered in 1984.

Eight others -- all contractors -- Harka Singh Chawan, Hari Prasad Rai, R B Subba, Hari Prasad Sharma, Sriniwas Agrawal, A B Gurung, Norbu Tshering Bhutia and Sonam Wangdi Bhutia were also sentenced to five months imprisonment by CBI court Judge S W Lepcha.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Bhandari and Pradhan and Rs 5,000 on the eight convicted. In default of the fine, the convicts would have to undergo an additional month's imprisonment.

The CBI had registered the case against 17 persons, including Bhandari, in 1984 on the recommendation of the then state government headed by B B Gurung.

It was stated that Bhandari and Pradhan, who was the then Rural Development Secretary, had abused their positions as public servants to award contract work of the Rural Development Department to their favourite contractors at high rates by ignoring the views of engineers of the concerned department thereby causing loss of Rs 2,41,120 public money.

They were charged by the CBI with criminal conspiracy, criminal misconduct and corruption.

However, the court granted bail to all the convicted people till the date of filing of appeal against their conviction in a higher court.

Greed of some people forcing others to pay a heavy price by jatin on 26 Oct 2008

The businessmen/contractors are spoiling the whole country, starting from Sikkim to Andaman-Nicobar islands. Greed of some people and tendency to judge everything in life in terms of money is spoiling even the most innocent and otherwise happy people in our country. These baniya communities from some specific places n India are introducing crime and corruptions among those simple people. Their ever increasing greed and lack of governance by elected political leadership is worsening the situation. I congratulate the CBI judge who sentenced the Congress leader and ex-CM. I hope central govt and state govs will introduce laws to protect local people from outside exploitation.

Former Sikkim CM sentenced by Diwakar Pulisetty MD on 25 Oct 2008

In India, winds of chnges are here to stay. Politicians in high places should be tried and convicted. The Anti Corruption Bereau and otehr law enforcement authorities should not limit its jurisdiction to smaller govt servants. Good Job

Corruption/ incompetence by Diwakar Pulisetty MD on 25 Oct 2008

Finally, a former CM was tried and convicted, if Im right this is the frst time in my lifetime anything ike tis happened. Sick and tired to see ACB arresting smaller guys and letting off big fish. The good days are ahead. India proved its secular ideology to the entire world including USA the champion of human rights. Concurrently, a muslim president a sikh PM and a catholic woman as supremo of ruling congress party were running the country's highest offices in the capital. With media and other agencies not to forget the private citizens relentlessly working as watchdogs, the politicians should confine to governing only and desist from corrupt practices. Oneday, like in present day Europe, service minded competent men and women only will enter politics.D. Pulisetty MD , St. Louis, USA

Come on you can do better by Corrpution hater on 25 Oct 2008

A fine of Rs. 10,000, that has no value today. What world are these judicial courts living in? They should slap a fine that everybody else will remember and not dare to repeat such acts while in government service. This is a perfect example of setting a precedent that yes, do whatever corruption you want and then get away with a 10,000 fine and a few months in prison.
