New Delhi, January 6: Former India cricketers lashed out at the umpires for their ‘incompetence’ during the second India-Australia cricket Test at Sydney and called for the immediate retirement of controversial West Indian Steve Bucknor.

The ex-cricketers also deplored Australians' unsporting conduct during the match and felt it was no longer a gentleman's game.

It was a combination of inept batting and "atrocious umpiring" that did India in, felt former wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani.

"Umpiring standards have gone down in this match, particularly in Bucknor's case. He is losing his vision and hearing as shown by some of his decisions. I suggest there should be a fitness test for umpires as well."

Kirmani also trained his guns at the Australians, saying that Ricky Ponting's men did not show "sportsmanship."

He said the umpires should use technology whenever they are in doubt.

"Whenever there is a doubt, the benefit should go to the batsman. But even if that's not the case, the on-field umpires should consult the third umpire as Bucknor did on a couple of occasions. But there was no consistency," Kirmani added.

Former captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi was particularly incensed with umpire Mark Benson for not consulting his colleague Bucknor about the contentious catch of Sourav Ganguly.

poor show by vinay dutt sharma on 07 Jan 2008

why just blame the umpires only ( we all know they made a blunder) but tell me how india can cope up with the international standards of cricket. we cant even play an over properly and we crib abt the umpiring. Let the indian team realise it within themself.I know dravid was unlucky and so was saurabh but then our tailenders should be givn some additional classes just to make them play one over atleast.

Sydney !! A real Shame !! by Sunil Kumar on 07 Jan 2008

The role of the UMPIRES is a serious concern in the overall matter. Had they been not BAISED, Harbhajan's matter would have been resolved

Harbhajan and the Aussie cricket team by Kris iyer on 07 Jan 2008

Today's issue of many Australian newspapers have also deplored the behaviour of the Australian team, saying that the two tests have left "a bad taste" in the mouth of cricket lovers. Two or three columnists have said that Aussie cricketers are good at sledging, they do it even now, "very subtly". They say Harbhajan was probably provoked into saying something in return "clumsily", although they point out there is no audio or visual recording of any of the allegations some Aussie players have made against Harbhajan. It is possible that a trap was set for Harbhajan - a pay back for his gutsy resistance to vulgar sledging by the Aussies while in India. The final day of the Sydney test there were very few people in the stadium. The game of cricket has suffered as a result of atrocious umpiring - most of the gaffes against the Indian team, but strangely, some prominent mistakes clearly benefitting the Aussie team, e.g., Bucknor's "not out" for Symonds on 30 runs for him, thus giving him a "bonus of 132 runs", as one Aussie commentator has written. A good look at the implications of every one of the umpiring mistakes is very interesting. It will be a shame if Indians do not draw some firm lessons from their experience. How can the IPL sign up, by paying huge monies, some of the tormentors of the Indian cricket team ? Will the products they endorse be boycotted by the Indian Public? Can IPL possibly lose money if they used Aussie cricketers? After all, the IPL is not dependent on the Aussie players, surely.

incompetent umpiring by seetharam on 07 Jan 2008

I watched the second test in dismay and shock.some misgivings may happen in umpiring decisions.but what I saw was outrageous. This and age, when we have the third umpire,it should be used when the incomptetnt umpires like steve becknor and Mr Benson are around who,it appears can neithr see or hear! I strongly support the ban on those two umpires and demand an apology from them for their incompetency.Hope in the third test they releigh on the third umpire rather than the deaf and dumb umpires.

I feel Bucknor should retire.Apparently his vision and hearing are not the same as they were.I hope money did not change hands.
