Kolkata, March 25 The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has suspended four officials on charges of “demanding and accepting bribe” from the taxpayers after a report of the vigilance cell of the civic body.

All the officials belong to Tolly Tax Department (TTD).

Harihar Pandey, an upper division clerk of the department, Arun Kumar Dey, senior bailiff, assessment inspector Jyotirmoy Mitra and sub inspector Madhushudan Dalai have been accused of accepting bribe from a private party who had approached the TTD for sorting out a mutation work in January.

Municipal Commissioner Alapan Bandopadhyay had ordered the suspension of the officials on March 7 for a period of three months.

A private party had earlier filed a written complaint against the four employees that prompted the officers of the vigilance cell to conduct a probe.

“After tracking mobile phone records and crosschecking the currency notes, it was confirmed that the concerned employees were involved in corrupt practices,” said a senior official who was part of the inquiry team

“If the charges are proved, the officials are likely to face termination,” the official added. The vigilance cell is yet to ascertain the exact amount of money that changed hands.
