Free asthma camp at DMCH on May 4

Ludhiana, May 1 Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) is observing Asthma Awareness Week from May 4 to 6, and organising a free asthma and pediatric camp on May 4.

The programme is being organised to mark World Asthma Day on May 4.

The camp will be held at the OPD block of the hospital. According to Dr Jagdeep Whig, Professor and Head of Pulmonary Medicine at DMCH, asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. Conservative estimates are that in India alone, about 40 million people are suffering from the disease, and the numbers are rising everyday.

The patients who to the camp for consultation will be entitled to free registration including free medicines, free spirometry (lung function) test, free urine (routine) and blood sugar test. They will also be eligible for 20 per cent concession on OPD investigation and indoor treatment in the General Ward, excluding usage of medical equipment.

Principal and Professor of Pediatrics Dr Daljit Singh said that coughs and colds are infectious diseases that are common in children. However, there are some children who have frequent or persistent cough. There may be a number of diseases like tuberculosis and respiratory infections that may cause this, particularly in children living in slums and overcrowded areas. But the commonest cause of a frequent or persistent cough in an otherwise healthy child is bronchial asthma.

Professor of Chest Dr UPS Sidhu said that an asthma attack is marked by cough, difficulty in breathing, wheezing, gasping for breath, chest tightness, leads to lung infection and fatigue. Assistant Professor Dr Anil K. Kashyap said that as asthma is caused by a variety of factors including weather conditions, food drugs, perfumes and other irritants, which vary from individual to individual. He advocated that a person should take regular exercise, take a balanced diet and remain physically fit to ward off such diseases.
