Frequent power cuts force colleges to opt for solar power

Kolkata, February 22 With electricity bills surging north and frequent power cuts, the colleges in and around the city are going green by switching to an alternative means of energy, particularly the solar energy.

After Ashutosh College fitted solar panels on its building’s roofs, the Scottish Church College will be following suit but in a phased manner.

In the first phase, the college campus will be illuminated with a dozen solar-powered streetlights that have been developed by West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Authority (WBREDA).

According to college sources, the frequent power cuts have led to security concern since there are girls’ hostels in the campus. After the completion of the first phase in the next two weeks, a fresh wiring will be done of the entire campus that will segregate the equipment consuming heavy power from the rest.

Usually, laboratory equipment such as furnaces and boilers consume a lot of power, said principal of the college J Abraham and added that during this phase fans and lights in the classrooms will be powered by solar energy.

In the final phase, computers will also run on solar power.

“It will save one-third of the amount we spend on electricity,” Abraham said.

The chairman of the WBREDA, SP Gon Chowdhury, said both the college and his organisation would share the burden jointly. The initial cost will amount to Rs three to four lakh.

Reddit allows users to submit news articles and other online content to the site. Users also give articles a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Reddit then uses those votes to build a user profile and to find articles to recommend to you. Users can also submit comments on items posted to the site.
