After Ashutosh College fitted solar panels on its building’s roofs, the Scottish Church College will be following suit but in a phased manner.

In the first phase, the college campus will be illuminated with a dozen solar-powered streetlights that have been developed by West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Authority (WBREDA).

According to college sources, the frequent power cuts have led to security concern since there are girls’ hostels in the campus. After the completion of the first phase in the next two weeks, a fresh wiring will be done of the entire campus that will segregate the equipment consuming heavy power from the rest.

Usually, laboratory equipment such as furnaces and boilers consume a lot of power, said principal of the college J Abraham and added that during this phase fans and lights in the classrooms will be powered by solar energy.

In the final phase, computers will also run on solar power.

“It will save one-third of the amount we spend on electricity,” Abraham said.
