New Delhi, May 12 Two days after Dr P Venugopal took charge as the director of AIIMS, the institute seems to be embroiled in a fresh controversy. In a complaint made to Dr Venugopal, Dr T D Dogra, Dean (Exams) and acting director for six months when the former was away, has alleged “misbehavior” at the hands of a few AIIMS doctors in the director’s office last week. Asking for “protection” and fearing “physical violence”, Dogra has also sought earned leave from May 12 to May 15, and summer vacations from May 16 to July 2.

He alleged that while the “misbehaviour” continued, Dr Venugopal “did not object for a single time to either of them while they were insulting and humiliating the seniormost professor of the institute.”

In the written complaint, sent directly to Dr Venugopal on May 10, Dr Dogra alleges that Dr B K Khaitan, president of the Faculty Association of AIIMS, and Maninder Singh, legal counsel for Dr Venugopal, “made highly derogatory, abusive and insulting remarks on me. I came to your chamber and complained regarding the misbehaviour of Dr Khaitan and Shri Maninder Singh.”

The letter says the remarks were made after he was called to Dr Venugopal’s chamber and asked for files of examination cell pertaining to the selection of senior resident doctors. “After getting aggressively insulted, humiliated and threatened of dire consequences, I left your (Dr Venugopal) chamber… By their aggressive behaviour, expression and the kind of language used by them, I along with my family feel threatened of physical violence. Therefore, request for necessary protection and action in the matter,” the complaint says. On Monday, Dr Dogra told Newsline: “I stand by the complaint I have made. Under the circumstances, it’s not feasible for me to continue working at AIIMS.”

He said there has been no response from the director’s office on his complaint.

Dr Khaitan said: “I haven’t heard of any such complaint. I can comment only after I have seen a copy of the complaint.”Dr Venugopal could not be contacted for comments.

Venugopal by Sudhir Agarwal on 13 May 2008

Venugopla and his goons are famous for such acts. Nothing new it in. When a person who even can not hold knife for few seconds is decorated by some of his well wishers as oldest surgeon. The media should ask for video of this surgery.
