Kolkata, April 18 Panchayat polls are approaching and Nandigram is tense once again. Supporters of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee gheraoed the Nandigram police station this morning, following the arrest of three BUPC members last night. Alleging political motivations, the protestors held the ruling party responsible for the arrest.

The police said the three were arrested in connection with a violence, which took place in Garchakraberia, Nandigram last night. Two groups had clashed and hurled crude bombs even as both CPM and BUPC camps accused each other for the incident.

S S Panda, SP East Midnapore said that the three arrested persons were also wanted in connection with the April 2007 murder of a local CPM leader Sahankar Samanta. The arrested persons were produced before the Haldia court today, which refused to grant them bail.

Sekh Sufian, A local TMC leader alleged that CPM is trying to establish its domination before panchayat polls by their armed cadres, as a result of which about 300 people of Sonachura have become homeless. Police is also reluctant to take measure against the CPM cadres. The TMC had alleged yesterday that three of its candidates for panchayat elections were missing from Khejury. The police said they had not received any written complaint from the party.

Significantly, the CPM had managed to win panchayat seats in Kalagachia and Kamarda in earlier elections as opposition had failed to file its nomination.
