Vadodara, January 25 The decision of the state government-owned Gujarat Energy Transmission Company Ltd (GETCO) to give away the substation’s management rights to private parties has not gone down well with its employees.

After staging a token dharna on Friday, the employees of Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh-affiliated Gujarat Vidyut Board Shramik Sangh (GVBSS) have threatened to intensify

their movement if the authorities do not revisit their decision. GETCO, which is a subsidiary of the parent company Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL), is learnt to have offered the management right of 55 substations with 66 KV capacity located across the state to private agencies earlier, and now, it is slated to offer another lot of 150 substations to private parties.

GETCO is looking for private companies which offer higher prices for annual maintenance and administration of its substations of 400 KV, 220 KV and 66 KV. But the employees have taken a strict stance on this. Gujarat Vidyut Board Shramik Sangh general secretary N G Barot said that it was clearly mentioned that no third party would be allowed to enter in substation administration and maintenance work when subsidiary companies were formed out of GEB, and GETCO is one of them.

On January 19, the GETCO management had met a union called Akhil Gujarat Vidyut Kamdar Sangh (AGVKS) to discuss the contentious issues. After this meeting, Girish Joshi of AGVKS said the management had assured that no new substation would be given to private parties. It is learnt that if GETCO staff maintain the 220 KV substation then it costs around Rs 15 to 16 lakh per month, while the private parties are ready to offer up to Rs 30 lakhs for a month. This is apparently the reason why GETCO is offering maintenance to third parties instead of employing its own staff. The 400 KV substation, which cost between Rs 29 and 30 lakh to GETCO, is getting Rs 50 lakh offers, while 66 KV that costs Rs 6-6.5 lakh per month per substations can fetch upto Rs 12.50 lakh from third parties.
