New Delhi, January 29 Robbery was the motive for the murder of a 70-year-old woman in Greater Kailash-I, according to the police. On Tuesday, the police said that three Bangladeshis and the woman’s maid were involved in the crime.

Nishi Banga was found murdered in her house in Greater Kailash-I in December. A police officer said that the senior citizen lost her life because she never expected her help, Halima, to target her. “She hired a domestic help without checking her credentials. Halima passed on information to her Bangladeshi accomplices that Banga lived alone and had cash and valuables in her house,” said the officer. The three men accused have been arrested and were identified as Mohammad Sahabuddin (27), Khokhan (19) and Alamgeer (19).

On December 12, the trio entered Banga’s house through the back door and smothered her to death. After killing her they spent a good one and half hours inside the house, scouring it for cash and valuables.

“After committing the crime, the three men left the house and assembled on the terrace of another house to distribute the booty,” said Anil Shukla, DCP, South.

“The modus operandi suggested that Bangladeshis are involved in the crime. We received information that three men had left Delhi soon after the murder, which strengthened our suspicion,” said a police officer.

“Our teams were in Bangladesh and Kerala and arrested the accused with the help of the Border Security Force,” said Shukla. Police recovered Rs 9,000, a mobile phone and some gold ornaments from their possession. They had stolen gold jewellery and Rs 50,000 from the house.

The police are now looking for Halima, whom Banga had hired a few days before the incident. The septuagenarian never kept a full-time domestic help since she feared trouble. She used to do all the household work on her own. She had even refused to register with the Delhi Police’s senior citizen cell. Her husband Harbans Singh and two sons, Vikas and Vishal, are settled in Italy and she looked after the family business in Delhi.
