Amritsar, January 17 After much hue and cry raised by teachers because of the non-resolution of important issues — pending promotions in particular — due to delay in convening meeting of the syndicate, the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) authorities have finally fixed the meeting for January 29. The meeting of the GNDU syndicate has not been held for over six months, causing resentment among the teaching fraternity as well as some of the syndicate members.

Virsa Singh Valtoha, a legislator and a member of Guru Nanak Dev University syndicate, has already written to Punjab Governor to call a meeting at the earliest. “The last meeting of the syndicate was held on June 28, in which finance and development officer (FDO) of the university, Varinder Pal Sharma was dismissed on charges of behaving contrary to the prescribed rules,” said a source. Since than no meeting has taken place.

He said that while the syndicate was scheduled to meet at least once every month, no meeting has been held for over six months. Though the university has announced the date for the meeting, it is yet to circulate the agenda. Though the agenda for the meeting has been kept a secret so far, it is presumed that the issue of suspension of FDO Varinder Pal Sharma may be discussed in the meeting of the syndicate.

Apart from this, matters pertaining to the administration of the university and issues relating to the teaching community, that had been lying pending for want of approval by the syndicate, and award of Ph.D degrees to scholars are also likely to come up for discussion.

“No one is yet aware of what is likely to be discussed in the meeting as no agenda has so far been circulated,” said a professor on the condition of anonymity.

GNDU registrar Dr. R.S. Bawa said that the syndics would soon be apprised of the agenda of the meeting.
