"It is really very sad to see him (Varun) saying all this on television," she told reporters in Rae Bareli.
"Varun must read the Gita first before talking about its preachings," Priyanka, who is on a two-day tour of her mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi's consituency, said.
She said his speech at a rally in Pilibhit was against the principles of the Gandhi family.
"Whatever Varun said was definitely against the principles of the Gandhi family for which they lived and died," Priyanka said.
On the Lalu-Paswan episode in Bihar, Priyanka said everything will become clear after the elections.
Replying to questions, Priyanka said she had no plans of entering politics.
Asked whether she would campaign for other party candidates, she said she would canvass only for her mother Sonia and her brother Rahul.
Regarding her meetings with party workers in Bachrawan, Priyanka said she had advised them to follow the model code of conduct in letter and spirit.
"I told them that the model code of conduct is very important for democracy and they should adhere by it," she added.

Priyanka Gandhi asking Varun to read Gita. Can there be a bigger joke than this? Has she read it herself. What is her contribution to the country. Country is paying for the security of these Fake Gandhi clan's security, including her husband and relatives, while we, the people of India are protected. Is that the Raj Dharma as per Gita?May be Priyanka needs to learn to read Hindi and then Gita herself before suggesting it to others.

Ganesh,You are confusing Iron fist with Hate Politics, All the people you mentioned except Hamas and Taliban are continuing the rule in their land by virtue of brutal force once they got elected. The vast majority of their people could not do anything despite they hated their leader , but eventually these leaders met with same fate what they have meted to their own people. In the process several millions of people suffered because they supported the ideology . It is time we look at the issues realistically and change the destiny of millions by saying no to hate politices.
Unfortunately I find most of the comments here justifying what Varun has said. Mistake cannot correct another mistake. If non BJP parties (not just congress) have been playing political gimmicks by ignoring muslim fundamentalism, we need to oppose it with a genuinely secular force. Not with blatant hindu fundamentalism. The media should pull words from the candidates contesting the election and expose them to the public. The public should defeat them in elections. Whipping religious passion can ruin the country. It will divert our focus from more serious issues. Come on folks....let us not waste time discussing Varun. There is nothing wrong in what Varun said. Bhagavat Geetha has criminals are to be punished and is not differentiating any religion or caste. It is so surprising and amusing to see two people champion the cause of Hindus .One of them Priyanka is 50 percent Catholic Christian, 25 percent Parsi and Only 25 percent Hindu if you consider Hinduism as religion and not a culture and way of life of Indians. The other champ Varun is 25 percent Hindu , 25 percent Parsi and 50 percent Sikh (in current context). I am also against any such comments by politicians and also I do not intend to offend any particular community by any of my comments. But there are some things about reality. Why a person like Varun will give a speech like this especially when politicians like Adwani are afraid of giving such speeches? Pilibhit has been a small peace loving constituency. Take a look at the religious-political map of Pilibhit. There has been considerable rise in political Goondaism and the worst sufferer is a particular community. Varun's speech shows anger against such goondaism being done in the name of elected representatives. It takes courage to stand up against those people knowing that this may create controversies which every political party will try to take advantage of. I would question any non Hindu's motives when they talk about secularism. Only Hinduism can be secular as inherently it provides space for all belief systems of the universe. I agree with James Mahomed about his views on Hinduism and tolerance. Varun has a great vision for the country and is pro Hindu and not anti any religion. Many second the opinion that once the majority Indian population(ie Hindus) are appeased, it would give them the feeling of security which would in turn get them back to/ stand by their orginal way of tolerance. After all most western, asian and other countries across the world take on the majority religion. Besides when Pak was formed as a Muslim country Hindustan should have been a Hindu one. Hinduism is after all secular as JAmes points out. Politicians at teh time should have been practical instead of idealistic - creating many a costly mistake. Sad but true. The next step would be to ensure that all religions have equal rights, on par with Hinduism. No more special favours to minorities. The original intention of reservations is lost - the idea was to bring every sect on the same platform and not for one to get to the top at the cost of bringing down the other.

The wise know that the name Gandhi now being exploited was a gift from Karamchand Gandhi to Feroze who was a GANDI BY SURNAME. This Nehru did not like when he came to know about the intimacy between his daughter and Feroze. So these present generation of Nehru Gandhi should read history about the name. Misuse has been on since the marriage of Indira Priyadarshini to Feroze. Even Priyanka ceased to be a Gandhi or Gandi after her marriage to Robert Vadhera.
